Anyone here ever bulid a Cobra kit?

Does anyone have any experience building a Cobra kit car? Can you give me some details on what you chose and how the build went?

I am toying with the idea to build a 302/351 with a TKO500 transmission and either 8.8 or 9in rear end. Even a mild 302 build would still put me at a low 12/high 11 second quarter mile while still being somewhat streetable.

Haven't built a Cobra, but have another vehicle which comes from a factory that puts out Cobras.

What kit is your current frontrunner? Superformance? Factory Five?

I want to build the kit in my garage, so definately not a Superformance. I have looked at Factory Five pretty hard, but when you start talking about a 100% non-donor build the price skyrockets pretty quickly. I really like the Hurricane Motor Sports since it's cheap for what you get. Their frame is not nearly as impressive as FFR, though. Plus the cockpit is fiberglass and not aluminum. But the Hurricane comes with a shortened 9" rear axle, 4 wheel discs, all cooling, steering, and fuel bits for just not much more than FFR charges.

The Lonestar is another nice kit, but that is pricy as well. I also don't know that I like the body on it. It doesn't hold all that well to the original.

No experience yet, but I watch things closely online. I'm planning to start my Factory Five kit in a couple of years. I'm going to buy a donor 5.0 fox next summer.

Do you feel comfortable with a donor? As far as I can tell, a good majority of FFcobra.com guys end up regretting the donor road because they ended up throwing out a bunch of 15 year old parts and re-buying new anyways. I do plan on buying a used or rebuilt engine, though. 302s and 351s are so plentiful I don't think there is a reason to spend $7,000 on a crate.

Well, those people got poor donors then. They probably bought a $1000 car, and that's just not the way to go. You're better off spending the few thousand more to get something nice. I'm trying to do a really inexpensive build, and all of the people who have done the really cheap builds get a NICE donor. That way, all of the parts are useable AND you can sell the leftovers on ebay for good money. I've seen several people recoup the entire cost of the Mustang by selling off the unused parts afterwards.

That makes sense, but then I hate to tear up a car that is in great condition. Vicious circle, I guess. Best bet would be to get a wreck, that way there are no tears for pulling apart a car that is in great shape. Someone did that with a 2004 Cobra, IIRC.

i looked at hurricanes when i thought about doing this. i liked their IRS option. it isn't the best for dragging, but i think it would be fun on the country roads through out the midwest.

on the hurricane forums some guy was fabricating an aluminum hood, trunk, doors and i think the rest of the body but i can't confirm. Text

for me it became a pipedream when i wanted to put in a 427 and found out the costs.

Yeah, the 427 is more than the entire kit.

There is a 427 Hurricane for sale. The guy wants $60,000 for it.

EDIT: Here it is.. His website documents the entire build. Very informative.
