Smashed my knee on a grip while rock climbing tonight. Pain took me to the ground. Its been two hours and although I've iced it and elevated it, the cap looks a little puffy and it does hurt to bend the knee both ways.

Should I be in excruciating pain for a break or is throbbing pain still indication? I'd really rather not fork out a bunch of money for a copay at a hospital. Just wondering if anyone has any experience.

I pay my debts.

But seriously, no idea but House says vicodin is yummy like candy. Better to have it and not need it than to wake up screaming.

Nope, but got quite a bit of skin scraped off it last year. I gambled, no hospital, healed fine, but went paranoid a few months back when I felt some pain.

If unsure, go to hospital. Pay the bill or risk being crippled for life, simple choice.

I fractured my kneecap back in March from skateboarding to campus. It took me about 6-7 weeks to be able to walk normally without pain anymore. The pain still lasted for another month or so when kneeling or turning my leg around the knee area. It hurt like hell and I couldn't bend my knee for at least 2-3 weeks. At the same time, I also fractured my left elbow, so I couldn't use crutches OR a wheelchair if I wanted to. It was a horrible experience for me.

I busted the shit out of mine about 5 years ago. I was on a 41 foot boat out in the ocean making our way back from Marathon FLA. to Galveston. The seas were rather high and something down in the cabin flew open. I went down to secure it when we hit a huge wave that sent me into the air....when I came down my knee landed on the corner of an open cabinet door. It smashed it good. I could barely walk for days. After the pain subsided a bit I noticed that I had smashed a hole in the kneecap. I could feel the hole and the splintered bone tissue. There are two options with a kneecap. You either have it removed or let it heal. I let it heal. I am fine today and the pain was manageable with careful movements and my total out of pocket cost was $0.00. No reason to go to the doctor when you know what the options are and can take care of one of them by yourself.

Damn. I've busted some kneecaps, but never mine. Sounds painful. I recommend a large dose of something for sure.

i owe the hospital a couple grand from when i got a wooden baseball bat broken over my head... that was fun.

im a tough sonofabitch apparently.. ended up with some bruised ribs and a slight concussion, but he ended up with a broken nose...that i dealt AFTER i got beaten with the bat. the blow to the head sounded like a huge GOOONNGGG but it just pissed me off more... i then fainted when the ambulance came.

Well I'm back and $75 poorer. God bless insurance though. The good news is that its just a deep bruise and not a fracture. Going to be sore for a while though.

I'd say it's worth it to get the x-rays and peace of mind. Still hurts like a bitch even if it's not broken though.

If you had really broken it, you may have had to go get it wired back together in surgery and then spent the first 2-3 weeks in a knee immobilizer.

I could have told you that. There isn't really a doubt when you break a kneecap. You either know it's broken or it's not.

Like any other bone, or getting a flat tire.
