I've been thinking of trying to find an amateur night at a comedy club somewhere in the Chicago area and giving standup a try. I'm going to work on some material, maybe 10 minutes worth and practice it like crazy and then see how an audience will react to it.
Anyone here ever tried to do standup before? How did it work out?
I want to try a very dry, kind of deadpan delivery. I'm not a very animated guy by nature, but I've done about 40-50 speaking engagements in the past (discourses, community lectures, work related speeches, etc..) and I've had very good response from the audience. I think the largest audience I've ever spoke in front of was about 200 people and while subject matter was basically a more serious topic I was able to get a lot of laughs from the few jokes I wrote into my discourse. I would like to study a few comedians who have a laidback approach to comedy, but I can't think of a lot of comics like that off-hand. Maybe Seinfeld, Carlin(?) or Bill Hicks, I don't know if they fall strictly under the dry humour category but they're not the really wildly animate type of comedians either.
Who's your favorite comedian?
I think right now maybe Greg Fitzsimmons, I first heard about him on the Stern show. He has a pretty good act, I like his style. Another comic I like is Cosby, I really admire guys who can kill without using any profanity. On the other end of the spectrum that new guy Katt Williams is pretty funny and of course George Carlin is like one of the godfathers of comedy. I'm currently looking for some stuff from Don Rickles, that guy is a genius when it comes to roast.
