i was on the chess team at my high school, but i sucked pretty bad...gotten a lot better since then 😀

I know how to play but never really cared much for the game. My little brother however has played in tournaments and the like. The USCF site says his 'Regular Rating' is 1412/25 and his 'Quick Rating' is 1562/15, whatever that means.

It's too much like what I do all day (software development).

At the end of the day I'd rather exercise different parts of my brain, like strapping on Power Armor and grabbing a Turbo Plasma Rifle in Fallout, or grabbing a sword in Final Fantasy, or zipping around in a Manta in UT2K4. Chess is too much work 🙂

Back when I used to play alot on yahoo, my ratings went all the way up into the 2100+. Nowadays, I fluctuate between 1350 and 1600. Depending on the day.

What would the rating be for, say, a seven-year-old novice player? Mine would be about half of that.

a good player has a rating at 1600-1700.a very good player 2000..I think topplayers have ratings around 2300-2600..a novice rating is at 1100.my rating was 1600 when I played...you go up when you win and down when you lose ...

I enjoy playing but I stink 🙁 Worse, I don't seem to get better with practice or by reading up on strategy.

i found a general mentaility that helps you win games. make sure every piece on the board is backed up, that way the opponet won't eat your pieces. while hes trying to break through, you can concentrate on hatching up a plan to check the king.

I dont think so you improve but perhaps you dont notice it...it takes a long time to be a good player for most people.
