Anyone here driven an S60R?

Yup, I've driven it. Next year we'll see the S60R get a much needed replacement of transmissions (both manual and automatic) along with different turbochargers. Volvo really dropped the ball on the S60R, advertising it as an M3 killer, when it just wasn't. The manuals had to be abused to achieve the 0-60 time of 5.4s. The automatic, tuned down to make 70 lb\ft less torque, was lucky to get to 60mph in under 7 seconds. Pitiful. But, as I said, next year, this will all be corrected. These problems can be corrected on current models with ECU updates. You need to sign a waver to have the torque limiter removed from the auto. Overall though, it drives like an AWD machine, although it tends to understeer. Upgraded shocks & springs really liven up the Comfort\Sport\Advanced modes, making them the track style options that they should have been.

I considered replacing my '03 Acura TL with one, but I'm waiting to see what they do with it next year. I'm also on the call list for my local BMW dealer, waiting for the first person who chooses not to take delivery on an E60 (the actual waiting list is enormous.)

I have a Volvo S70 T5 as a project car, and it's not difficult at all to make them faster than an S60R. They're FWD only, and the american versions can only be had in automatic, but they weigh almost 400lbs less (the S60R is a porker) and have a similar inline 5 cylinder turbocharged engine.

If I were looking at the mid-range AWD sedan market, to buy today, I'd have a hard time choosing the S60R over a slightly more expensive S4 with an V8, or even a gently (heh) used e39 M5.

i'll admit it, i had to look it up to know what it was. yep looks sweet! never driven one (or any volvo actually)

are these rwd, awd, or fwd? 300hp to the front wheels is a bit excessive

Don't be ridiculous, there are plenty of S70s putting down more than 300hp to the front wheels. Even through automatics! 8" wide wheels do a lot for you, and a stiff suspension (adjustable on the S60R.)

Yeah, I don't like Volvo's automatic trannies much myself, it's too bad they don't have many manuals!

I want to have a Volvo project car someday, turbo bricks :D

I'm going to go test drive one of these tomorrow

It could have 120hp and still plow like the piece of farm equipment that it is. That's what FWD cars do. There's no way around it. After having a RWD Volvo 960 w/ ~$3000 worth of racing suspension work into it, all the later FWD based models handle like craaaap. They turn extremely wide too.

That's nothing against Volvo, just all FWD sh!tboxes. As far as FWD sh!tboxes go, my Volvo S70 T5 will hand my Acura TL-S it's ass in any event you throw their way.

Didn't they do a commercial on this car where it flipped over multiple times and there wasn't even a scratch or dent to the car? Those crazy Volvo guys.

I went and drove an S60R today, unfortunately all they had were automatics since the manual was sold earlier in the day. I was VERY dissapointed by it, possibly because it was automatic and had significantly less torque. Acceleration in general just felt slow, gearing was too tall IMO!

That's what I thought when I took one for a test drive. I still would have bought one if they would have given me a better deal though.
