Anyone here driven a late 80's or early 90's Porsche 911?

How does the feeling of driving a late 80's or early 90's 911 compare to something a bit more recent like an 02-03?

I've driven a 996 911 and absolutely loved it in every way, I've heard the older ones are loads of fun as well.

Edit: I'm talking about the whole package - power, handling, interior, etc.

OP, are you planning on buying one or just test driving? if you wanna test drive, there isn't a limit on how many cars you can drive. if you wanna buy one, there's 14 years of depreciation you need to factor in...wouldn't there be a significant price difference?

Right now it's more of a curiosity than anything else

I remember back in high school when this guy had a orange 911S that use to stretch second gear up the hill in front of my house doing 45 mph and I thought that the sound of that car was so cool! Back then, the car cost about 10-12k dollars brand new and only about sixty were built a day back then.

I've driven tons of 911's and I feel comfortable in saying that you can't go wrong with any 911 regardless of year.

I have an 88 911 turbo cabriolet and it is a pure blast to drive. I don't drive it everyday it is reserved for weekends or when I want to have some fun driving.

I've driven faster vehicles, but I don't think I have come across anything more fun to drive.

Drove a '95 911 Cabrio.

Honestly I did not enjoy the car. It was a serious test drive and I found out I'm just not a Porsche 911 guy.

Cockpit was cramped, then again the sales guy was 300+ lbs and I'm all of 5'8".

I did not like the pedal feel as it was like driving an ol skool VW bug.

996 is much more refined. I loved the car but not $42K loved and I would not be caught in a rear engined watercooled Porsche. It's just not natural. The 930 slantnose turbo is my favorite .

I'm looking to test drive a 968 next and see how that fits me. Perhaps a 944 Turbo S.

I once drove a '93 or so Cabriolet for a short amount of time. It was at night, I couldn't see the shift pattern on the knob, and managed to start it from a dead stop a couple of times in 3rd gear! Damn so much torque.

My dream car is a '73 911 Carerra RS 2.7L. Saw one in orange at that big auto museum/store in Vegas...oh man so beautiful. It was so expensive there wasn't a price on it.

First one I drove was a 993 (1993), then the 1995 overhaul, what was the best yet...
Design of the 996 is crap, so daddy did not buy anymore of them. 🙁 The current design however is more back to the Porsche 911 roots again 🙂
Daddy also had 911s since the 70s, so he'd know the exact difference in 3 year steps...
Unfortunately I just got my license in '93, but hey...still nice to drive to school in a 911 from time to time so I don't complain 😉

The biggest advancements were always made in the rear suspension to compensate the "nervous" back of the car. From 1993 on they did a very goog job on that, so the rear wheel drive effect is compensated quite well and the traction is awesome. If you go for the earlier models you mentioned '88-'92 you'll have more work regarding safe handling, but also more fun factor...powerslide anyone? 😀

I definitely plan on owning an aircooled 911 at some point as a "fun car". Probably mid -'80's -ish.

Ive driven them but never owned one. Its an absolute blast! It's hard to describe, but it just plain feels good.

I've driven a '74 911 S, and it is a blast to drive, while it isn't amazingly fast (I think around high 6's for 0-60) it gets a lot of looks, and is a lot of fun.

The closest I got to driving an old school 911 is in NFS Porsche Unleashed 😛

Hah same here. But such a good game!

And the engine note!

I'm going to have to go ahead and say I disagree

i'm going to have to agree with that. my roommate's rx-7 has flooded for the second time this year and the engine is not happy. i don't know exactly what the problem is, but the reliability of those cars is pretty bad.

I've always dreamed of a black on black with black "deep dish rims" 1977 911s

Dunno why I love that model so, maybe because it's the year in which I was born. I saw an orange one locally many years ago while in highschool and fell in love.

My Father-In-Law had a 1989 Porsche 911 Targa in the mid 90s. I drove it a few times but I haven't driven a later model. I liked his '89 though. It was fairly powerful, handled well and looked very nice IMO. I was kind of bummed that he traded it without asking me first. I might have bought it from him if I knew he was thinking of selling it.
