I am going to buy a truck within the next week. I am looking at a 1998 Chevy full size 4x4 supercab. I have a buddy that owns 5 Ford 4x4's. He said he wouldnt buy a chev, there transmissions are junk. Anyone else experience this? What do you think, Chev or Ford?

This is the typical Chevy vs. Ford flamefest. Just choose one and get on with your life.

Having 5 Ford 4x4's, it sounds like your friend uses them as work trucks... Obviously his 5 trucks have stood up too all the punishment he has put them through. Personally, I think the 4x4 F150's are a lot nicer than any Chevy out there...

I agree with Alienwho, "This is the typical Chevy vs. Ford flamefest". I've owned both Ford and Chevrolet Trucks. I've not had transmission problems with either. The quality is the same for either. I'd just go by appearance. If you like the looks of the Chevy, go for the Chevy. Same with the Ford.

My dad owns a Dodge, before that we owned a GMC. I would strongly disagree with your friend's comment. GM's automatics are quite good, even thier 4L60e was used in some Jaguars and some of BMW's 5 speed autos are GM stock. And in some of the higher range GM trucks, you can get an Allison tranny.

The only reason we went Dodge instead of GM is because GM's diesel at the time sucked.

Demon-Xanth Thank you, thats exactly the kind of information that I am looking for, not trying to start a flame war. Thanks.

I knew several people that had chevs that had to go get the front axles re-splined. Not positive what year they were (95 or so). They would get them in deep snow (maritimes in Canada) and they would just hear this awful grinding noise and no more 4X4. I also know several chev owners that had to get the $100 "dildo" replaced that engaged the 4X4. I personally own a 4X4 Short wheel base F150 and have had any probs with it, I never have to use the 4X4 in Ohio though ;)

Transmission data can be found at the library or book store. Find a used vehicle guide, in it will list the major problems occuring with each vehicle. Personal vehicle history opinions can be rather flakey, as we have different mechanical abilities. To me a vehicle that leaks a quart of oil every week is in need of repair, to farmer bob that's just ole bessy, she been a good truck for years.

Choose the truck that fits you best, and best deal. It really is a gamble either way, unless you buy a vehicle that had a major recall-(vehicle reports will list these) you have the same chance of getting a junker as a 10yr problem free cruiser.

Good Luck in your choice...

Gots me a 87 Chev sitting on 44s, (the ones that were stolen and recovered) I think for the older trucks, chevy is the way to go, but after 1990, they are pretty much crap. the trannys are a problem, so is IFS. Ford is the way to go, for 90 and up, especially if you are considering diesel, the powerstroke kicks @ss all over anything chevy has.

Extended cab trucks are heavier than standard cab.

3/4 ton trucks are heavier than 1/2 ton trucks.

Dodge has a bad reputation for automatic transmissions right now. My '96 1/2 ton standard cab w/318 engine did just fine. I traded it in on a '00 1/2 ton extended cab w/360 and the transmission has trouble staying in overdrive on freeways on windy days. I think it is because the engine isn't quite powerful enough for all that weight.

I use 3/4 ton extended cab trucks for work and I find that all automatic transmissions go out after about 150,000 miles on serious work trucks (Ford, Dodge, or Chevy).

i have a 95' chevy silverado, with the Z71 off-road package. it has 122,000 miles on it, and the only thing that i have had to fix was the alternator about a month ago. transmission is fine so far. i'm about to sell it and get a car, though, because it is a pain in the ass to drive, and I like to ago around corners fast. When I do that in my truck, i end up skidding around corners, and I get weird looks from people in the other cars.....:D

#1. That is the four door version.
#2. It didn't do as well because Ford decided to remove the second door pillar on both sides (stupid).

Simple solution, don't buy the new four doors.

I would go with the Ford myself. We used both trucks at work, and the blue oval ones seem to hold up better. BTW over at edmunds they call the silverado the "lemonrado". Just FYI.

I would NOT go for one of the newer Ford F150's. I have not hear d much in the way of good feedback. The older variety (1992-1996) are strong and much easier to work on.

A transmission can be what you build it to be. I have an uncle who builds transmissions, and he is of the opinion that OEM trannies aren't worth the fluid you put in them. He always rebuilds the transmissions in his trucks, regardless of operating condition.

I havea 94 F150, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Chevy's are good too, I just am partial to Ford's. Not much technical advice, sorry.
