I took a gamble and bought the Asus P5E-VM HDMI motherboard to build my HTPC around. I wanted to see if I could build it to play back HD-DVD and Blu-ray content without hardware assist.
From the Anandtech article it looked like all you would need would be a C2D running at least 2.67GHz.
I am using Showtime 4 from the Nero 8 suite.
First attempt was with my CPU (E2460) overclocked to 2.67. Playing back the HD-DVD "Next" which is H.2.64 was pretty smooth except for pans and high motion scenes where there would be a stutter every now and then.
Next I upped the overclock to 3.0 and tried it again. Less stuttering but still not watchable in my opinion as I require no stuttering.
Next I bought the CoreAVC professional H.264 software decoder which is supposed to be better than the one built into Showtime 4. Better results still as but there will still be a slightly detectable stutter about every 15 or 20 seconds.
If you are doing H.264 decode without stuttering using 1080p/i content please tell me about your hardware and software.
Thanks
