I'm looking to buy some Roman coins to frame and hang as a decoration. What do I need to know? I'd like to get some coins that the detail is visible on. What about buying uncleaned coins from Ebay? How do I clean them up? Are they worth it? Can I get some older coins from the time of Caesar?

Budget for the coins is about $50. What can I get for that? One good coin? A couple of good ones? A big pile of crappy ones?

I don't know about Roman coins, but I always thought those people who make necklaces out of gold Double Eagles are pretty cool.

Check out www.civitasgalleries.com. I've met the guy who runs it and he's fair. If you don't see what you want on the site, shoot him an email and explain what your looking for.

In coin collector lingo, you're looking for "ancient" coins. Roman coins are one of the subgroups that fall under the "ancient" category.

Thanks. It appears that all of the coins that have detail are a couple of hundred each :(

There absolutely are cheaper ancient coins around. I guess they don't have any listed on their site. I know you can find leptons (aka widow's mite) for under $20 with good detail.

Let me see what I can find out. Are you set on Roman coins, or are ancient Greek ones OK also?

I'm set on roman coins. I found some pretty good replicas on Ebay for $5-6 each and they have good detail. I might go that route.

Yeah, the replicas will certainly look a lot better for the money.

if they are for decorative purposes only you should buy the imitations anyway.

Yep they are. I'm doing a Roman bath in my new place. I'm gonna do the walls in a marble effect, put up a roman style mirror (which I'm still trying to find) maybe some roman statues, a couple pics of the colosseum that I took, some coins in a picture frame on the wall, and eventually I'm having a mosaic made of the Roman Empire at its height :)
