anyone here build their own sub box?

Aharami

Lifer
Im in the process of building my own sub box for the car.
care to give any tips/advice?

Plus I have couple specific questions...
1. what type of wire should I use to wire the terminals on the sub to the terminals on the box? I will be running a 10w7 with a an Alpine MRD-M1005 amp (should provide around 700 W RMS)

2. What is best type of terminal to use on the box itself? the premade box I bought a couple years ago for my infinity sub has terminals like this

but the actual connectors are screw type connectors that look like this

Is that the only design out there? Or is there anything better?

3. How does this terminal attach to the box itself? Do I just make a cutout the size of the terminal enclosure on the side of the box and screw the terminal in there? Wouldnt this defeat the purpose of a sealed enclosure? Also the terminal enclosure is made of plastic thus one side of the sub box will be all MDF except for a hole covered by plastic. Would this cause any negative effects?

4. One thing I was thinking of doing is something like this

where the wires run from the subwoofer terminals and stick out of a small hole on the sub box. I can make the hole small enough so that the wire barely fits and then seal it up using silicone. But instead of leaving the wire ends bare like in that pic, I would put appropriate connector to connect those wires with the wires running from the amp.

5. Thinking about using 10 gauge wire to run from the amp to the box. Is that large enough?

Gorilla Glue FTW.

screws are only to hold the box together until it dries.

silicon the INSIDE of the box.

make sure your cuts are square.

MDF is good.

do it the way #4 shows it, no leaks that way, silicone the wire GOOD.

10 ga. is plenty

buy 3/4" MDF from HD should be about $18 a board.

be careful, it splits REALLY easy from screws.

All the above advice is totally true. I'll just add:
1. Check and recheck your measurements. Nothing sucks more than being just a bit off on a side/corner.
2. Go ssslllooowww when putting it together. If you speed one of the screws in too fast, it will shatter the board when the head hits it.
3. Get a dustmask/goggles. MDF dust is ultrafine and gets EVERYWHERE.
4. Enjoy it!

good advice in this thread, matter of fact i'm using #4 on my next sub box, period. Nice speaker.

now i gotta find out where I can get some good quality 10 ga speaker wire. I dont think home depot carries speaker wire that thick

Parts express sells good speaker wire cheap. Oxygen-free copper.
You could use 12 gage wire if its only a few feet. The voice coil has something like 20 gage wire. I hope you're using a sealed box.
