Im 19...sophmore in college. Been feeling the way i have since around 8th grade?
If you've been feeling that way since 8th grade, it's a pretty serious situation, wouldn't you say? I've been treated for depression on and off, for several years. My advice, as a consumer of mental health services, would be for you to seek out a psychologist or counsellor or psychiatrist who uses cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat depression. CBT is an approach where you look at your patterns of thinking, and the way your negative/ unrealistic/ unhealthy thoughts lead to feeling depressed. CBT is about changing the way you think, to change the way you feel. It is a long-term solution to depression. My guess is that if you went to a GP or doctor, they will probably immediately suggest you go on antidepressant meds. Personally I don't think medication alone is a long-term solution to depression. Meds might be appropriate if your depression is worsening, or if it is really bad. But I think you really need to do the CBT in addition to any meds you decide to take. The fact you've been feeling this way since 8th grade probably indicates some long term issues which need to be addressed with a psychologist (as opposed to just popping an antidepressant medication and hoping everything will be OK). CBT is basically the preferred treatment for depression, patients who do CBT have longer lasting results than people who just take antidepressants.
