There is a big difference between feeling depressed and having clinical depression. It's not the same.

Does your family have a history of depression? Was there a certain incident that brought you down? I think if it's the former you'd probably be prescribed some type of anti-depressant medication. If it's the latter than I think you would go through psychotherapy where you talk to a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

I really havent been diagnosed or treated, but I still choose to self-medicate with alcohol, gambling and prostitutes.

I was diagnosed with (and attempted treatment of) depression a little less than a year and a half ago. I tried pills, and quit after taking a grand total of 3. The things made me feel so dizzy that I really couldn't do much besides sit. Hell, if I laid on my bed it felt like the *bed* was spinning :p

What really helped me out was just to get away from as much of the situation that was causing my depression as possible. It took quite a while - and I was quite the bitter, mean, nasty person in the mean time - but my situation improved, and so did my attitude.

Im 19...sophmore in college. Been feeling the way i have since around 8th grade?

If you've been feeling that way since 8th grade, it's a pretty serious situation, wouldn't you say? I've been treated for depression on and off, for several years. My advice, as a consumer of mental health services, would be for you to seek out a psychologist or counsellor or psychiatrist who uses cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat depression. CBT is an approach where you look at your patterns of thinking, and the way your negative/ unrealistic/ unhealthy thoughts lead to feeling depressed. CBT is about changing the way you think, to change the way you feel. It is a long-term solution to depression. My guess is that if you went to a GP or doctor, they will probably immediately suggest you go on antidepressant meds. Personally I don't think medication alone is a long-term solution to depression. Meds might be appropriate if your depression is worsening, or if it is really bad. But I think you really need to do the CBT in addition to any meds you decide to take. The fact you've been feeling this way since 8th grade probably indicates some long term issues which need to be addressed with a psychologist (as opposed to just popping an antidepressant medication and hoping everything will be OK). CBT is basically the preferred treatment for depression, patients who do CBT have longer lasting results than people who just take antidepressants.

Back in high school I was severly depressed. My mother actually tricked me into going to the doctor one day. All he did was prescribe some Ambien (the sleep aid) and said that getting some good sleep would fix it...

It didn't. I got more sleep but just felt horrible during the day. I eventually made some better friends, got out more, and felt better about myself. My advice, don't worry, life sucks for all of us. The main reason I was depressed was because I had just gotton out of two years in a military academy and I went back to public school and hated everybody all over again. Get out and do something, even if you already do. I don't know what else to tell you...but good luck.

I've been on medication throughout high school, and actually had an episode where I wound up in the hospital from basically a breakdown. I'm now in college and doing well. PM me if you seriously want to talk about what it's like.

my family has no such history of depression and i was put on both.

and as someone mentioned later in the thread, ambien is not the solution to your problems unless you're truly anxious and cannot sleep at night. you sound like you're a candidate for an SSRI (paxil, prozac, zoloft, etc.)

you can also PM me if you have any questions.
