Anyone here been to Clearwater Florida?

And I've never been there and don't really know much about the place. I'm just wondering places that people would recommend to stay and what to do.

I'm going to be with my girlfriend and another couple. We like to party at night and like to be outside during the day at beaches. We're looking for things to do during both the day and night, and even for a hotel to stay at, as none of us have ever been there.

Also is renting a car necessary there?

You'll be close to Sarasota. Mote Marine Lab is there, which is nice. The Florida Aquarium is in Tampa, that's nice too. Tampa is a decent sized city, so there's some night life. Other than that, all I know is the beaches in clearwater are great...but what else would you want to do? I wish I knew of any particular spots/bars to visit, but I live directly east, on the other side of the state.

Check out Pier 60 Beach, there's plenty of bars and good food along the coastal blvd. The water used to be a lot clearer though...Buy some tickets for the ocean screamer (big yellow boat that attracts dolphins) I forgot the exact name... You can always go para sailing also. I don't think renting a car is necessary because every decent hotel has their own buggies that you can drive around.

If you want to see a beautiful beach, make sure you check out Anna Maria Island, just like the Caribbean beaches you see in Corona ad's.

So I think we're probably actually staying in St. Petersburg now.

mariok2006, how far is that Anna Maria Island from that area? Any idea? We plan on renting a car as it's only like $150 for 4 days, and split between 4 peole it's not much.

Anna Maria Island is about a half hour drive at most from that area...

Clearwater has some great beaches and some nasty traffic traps. I liked the small town feel and restaurants there as opposed to the east coast.

Not an ugly girl on the beach ... t-backs everywhere !! And if you are ugly, they give you a Georgia license plate so everyone knows not to look at you. I had four tattooed and oiled girls laying on towels in front of me with my digital camera tucked by my side thinking the ATOT guys will kill me if I don't get this shot ... then I remembered the speech I got from our hosts at the time about having a girl pull a pistol out after he looked her way and waved hi while sitting at a traffic light (happened multiple times too). Now I know there was no way to hide a pistol, even a derringer, in those tiny cloth postage stamp sized outfits, but I was young, scared and very naive.

I grew up a few miles south of there... Redington Shores.

Wonderful place, a little crazy during Spring Break, which is next week for Hillsborough County (5th largest school district in the US!). The state colleges have already had their spring breaks, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Anna Maria is heaven... quiet and peaceful. PM me if you want more info.

We vacation at Clearwater Beach often.

Hulk Hogan live a couple blocks away, and hangs out with his groupies nearby at Frenchy's on the beach when he's in town.

Dali Museum is 30 minute drive

Far better vacation than Sanibel Island.
