I'm taking my first vacation in two years (I don't count evacuating for Katrina a vacation, but my job did) and I'm going to Caddo Lake to do some bass fishing. I might hit up some other lakes. Sabine pass, who knows.

Anyone else like to bass fish? Got a favorite bait or lure? Caddo is shallow and muddy, so I'm probably going to go with a chartreuse texas-rigged worm.

Edit:

Well, I didn't catch anything. The place I used to fish was inaccessable, so I had to try on public land and that didn't work well. It was also really, really hot. Not the best conditions. Anyway, here are the pics. They're huge (7MP) and there are 220 or so of them, each with a preview, so the whole thing is very bandwidth heavy.

I like using flat fish or kwik fish lures around here for bass. Worms do not seem to impress the bass on the snake from what I have seen.

The best bass lure in my experience is a Lucky Craft Live Pointer of some kind. They are expensive, but very much worth it - they are eerily lifelike and bass just tear them up.

I've only really fished at Caddo Lake (I used to live in a house on the lake as a kid), but from what I hear, Louisiana fish love worms. I know they do up there. The only other lures I've had a lot of luck with were Rat-L-Traps and Rooster Tails. Gaspergoos love the Rooster Tails.

Flourescent rooster tails are awesome around here for trout right at dusk. Just charge them up so they glow good, and the trout cant keep from striking those things.

I have had some luck with Rapala's with bass, but that live pointer just pisses them off for some reason, and they just go for it.

I would not know about fishing with worms for bass, I have tried a few times around here and they just don't go for it. That is just for the bass around here, in ponds and on the Snake River. It is probably a much different story down there.

take along 3 or 4 spinning baits with different blade configurations... also add a few plastic worm/grub looking trailers to them. With jsut a few good lures and an assortment of trailers you can create a lot of combinations. Start iwht white spinning lure with red trailer. The buzz baits are nice for floating a spinning over weed beds

I'm pulled a lot of largemouth out of Lake Houston / San Jacinto River with purple worms. I've caught a few with spinners and fake frogs. I'd take a large assortment of lures.

Yeah, like to bass fish here. Although my productivity sucks, I hoping to do alittle better in the future. I bought a little 14 foot jon boat last year. In the process of decking it out for an electric only lake here in the county that produces some good size bass 10+ lbs. I believe a guy pulled out a 15 lber back in april. Go to bassresource.com, they got a nice little forum.

I've caught a couple Bass before. It's quite a feeling when you know you've got it. I've always used worms. I've found that Bass are generally not interested in worms, so you have to do a bit of work. I create a lot of motion with the worm and try to annoy the fish if I know where they are.

I used to fish Caddo all the time a few years ago. I had the most luck catching Crappie at a place called Devil's Elbow in 30 ft. of water. Never had much luck up in the main lake except for a lot of brims. Most bass I caught were on Hank Parker's Classic white spinner-baits and chartreuse shallow crank baits. The thing about Caddo is that every Cypress tree looks like it should have a bass on it.
If fishing was slow we would just kill time by hauling ass through the twisting channels.
Ah... good times on the bayou.

i like using hula-boppers or little green snag-proof froggies that float on top.

edit: but if they are feisty they will hit anything that moves.

My go to lure the past few years has been a 7 inch worm rigged texas style. Fished SLOWWWWWWWWWWLY. Favorites are the green berkely gulp (can't remember the name of the actual color) as well as yamamoto senkos. I have a large variety of colors. Never been skunked; usually on days when everyone else at the shore comes back skunked, I've had at least a half dozen.

The gulp is because I had a free trial pack. Prior to that, I was hooked (pun intended) on senkos. That's all I'd use. Wife and I were hammering the largemouths one day. She needed another senko, I noticed I only had one left. One of the downsides of any of the soft plastics is that they don't last for many fish. Then again, if at the dock, I said, "would you pay 25 cents per bass 15 inches or longer?" most people would say "heck yeah!" Anyway, I said to the wife, "sorry, all out of the Senkos. Here, try this." I didn't think the gulp had a chance of beating the yamamotos. Over the next 15 minutes, she had about 10 bass; I had one. Ever since, I've stocked up on both. Some days one works, some days the other works.

At a private lake near Houston
Ross with the big bass, his brother Brett mugging for the camera.
On my friend Gary's family property 40 min west of downtown Houston.
Two ponds , stocked with fish and occupied by alligators. trying to find the picture of them.
Sorry for the fuzzy quality, it's a scan from an old photo. didn't want to screw with it too much
