when i was a kid, my dad took me to this place in washinton D.C. it was this really big place with liek 100 foot ceilings, somewhere downtown.
he bought me this leather bound stamp book, and he let us pick like 20 dollars worth of stamp pieces.

so fast forward liek 12 years.

so i decided that i want to slowly start collecting again... any tips, hints, or book suggestions on how to start a real nice collection of stamps

1. They are called stamps, not "stamp pieces".

2. When someone refers to you as a philatelist, don't take offense.

All depends on how much you want to spend. Stamp collecting can be a huge money pit or can be free, depending on how you go about it.

Personally, I prefer collecting newer stamps rather than old ones, since they're more colorful (US ones at least). If USPS still has them, I would buy the USPS annual stamp issue book, with the actual stamps. They contain all the US stamps that were issued in that particular year.
