I'm thinking of majoring in political science next year instead of aviation like I had orignally planned since I have such an interest in politics, but I'm not sure what kind of job I could get that would make use of the degree if I didnt want to continue to law school. Anyone here a poli sci major?

I'm a poli sci major. Let me tell you, upper level poli sci classes are like ATOT. Plus I was in college when the Practice was a hot new show, so we had alot of fat chicks (Camryn Manhiemites). In the end I learned politics isn't worth discussing with anyone.

That is easily the funniest thing I have read on this forum in this past month. :D

There is a guy across the hall from me that is majoring in Poli sci. We laugh at him, and call him bad names. He got accepted into law school though...so I suppose he will probably end up making more than me. However, we are all infinitely cooler than he is.

Theres alot of options.

You could get a MPAff or a MPP and get a job for lobby groups or the govt in various roles. Or you could go to law school. Or even buisness school(if you have the work experiance). In any event you want at least a 3.75 when you graduate, and some sort of honors if possible.

Only a waste if you wasted your time in college. If you didnt get good grades, and didnt go tograd or professional school, yeah Id say it was a waste.

Thats why you minor in communications. Any school that has a communication major, typically has alot of hot chicks in it.

<-- poli sci, ucla, june 2003.

what am i doing? working in hell. i found a job so i could stay in LA. so i've been doing customer service for an internet company that i REALLY want out of.

i just interviewed with a legal company, and i think they like the fact i have cs experience and that i like the law itself.

as for things you can do... you can do a lot of different things, it just won't be related to your major. if you want those lobbying jobs, you either have to be really good, have the internships, or preferably, have a masters. and you'll have to work your way up the ladder once you get into the lobbying firm.

most of my poli sci friends are at law school or grad school. others double majored in something else and chose alternate career paths. teaching.. business etc. it's all in how well you do, what other things you learn, and how well you present yourself.

my future is most likely going to be going to grad school or law school. i just need to pick when. :p

as for the classes itself... pick what you like. there are requirements at each school you have to fulfill, but at least pick classes that will be interesting in you so that you don't fall asleep doing the reading. in every class, you are going to have the ULTIMATE nerd. the one that knew since he was five that he was going to law school so he could be a politician kind of nerd. he kisses up to the professor, asks questions to extend classes by 10 mins, etc.

i minored in poli sci. once you take world politics all of the other classes will basicly say the same thing. except for the political theory classes. i'd like to kill machiavelli right about now.

I'm a Poli Sci major. Switch from CS.

Yeah yeah, no job but at least I can graduate because I HATED CS w/ a passion. Was doing miserably and felt miserable also.

I don't like current event politics or internal American politics, but rather I like international politics as well as political theory.

What am I going to do for a job? Anything I can get. Don't want to be a lawyer oddly enough. *shrug*

I was a poli sci major, I went to law school. All the engineers made fun of me, I'm looking forward to their jobs going to India and me making more than them :)

You can work in politics in DC or the local level as another option, but that mainly sucks. I did it for a bit as an intern.

yep, I was in the same situation as you. Started as a CS major, but somewhere along the way I realized this degree at Carolina was offered as an Applied Math program, and I suck at math. When my GPA dipped below 2 I had to switch majors. Went with something liberal artsy enough and was able to salvage my GPA somewhat into a graduatable range. Now I'm beginning to realize I should've been an art major...

Like many said here it really is either something you love or something you will put to waste, personally I put my degree to waste as I was a polisci major with my concentration being on international relations and I ended up in IT with no desire to do anything related to politics...hopefully I will move into a sales or serious customer service position...

the classes are alot like ATOT or the politics and news forum, all of or most of your professiors will be so liberal it will make your brain bleed, either that or you will turn into a modern day hippie growing weed in your parents basement :)

do yourself a favor and either love politics and go on to work for a think tank, candidate, law profession, or some underpaid govt office...heck even a teacher...

or follow a path geared towards more real world work experience like a business, finance, pre med or something truly useful in this capitalist market we live in....if I could do it again I would either get my business, management, or even better a pharmeceutical career path as pharmacists make good money and are in high demand.

good luck.

I'm a poli sci major, but it's really more of a supplement to my main major--Criminal Justice. I'm going into Law Enforcement, but there's always a chance that I could become injured and/or disabled so that I won't be able to do that anymore. Poli sci is a liberal art, which will show that I have general skills that could apply to another job. It's also a personal interest of mine, and I plan to work for the government in some capacity for most of my life.
