Anyone here a longshoremen?

I'm curious if anyone here is a longshoremen and if so, what is your opinion of the job? I know there is a high demand for the job but anyone know if they hire part-time or is it strictly full time work?

I know its hard to get in since they are union but once you do you can make some big $$$

I am not one, but I know one in the Baltimore Harbor.
For the most part he is satisfied with the job. It pays well and is easy. Due to the Union however he has to put in many many years before the older people retire and he gets to start on the jobs that pay the real money. He isn't rewarded for good work so instead just does what he needs to to get by. Because of the long hours he doesn't know of any part-timers.

I have a friend whose father is the business manager of his local union...and my friend is NOT a Longshoreman, he's an Operating Engineer. Becoming a Longshoreman is not a job you can just "walk into". There are many other people who have been waiting to get on full-time, so you'd probably have to spend quite a bit of time on the "part-time" list working whenever they need extra people before you'd have a chance at working full time. Many people spend years waiting... The money is good, the benefits are excellent, and while the work can be physically demanding, it's still considered to be a highly desirable job.
