anyone here a EMT?

I took an EMT class at my college, it was about 2-4 hours a day three days a week for 8 weeks i think. Then I took the certification test and bam, got my license. I worked for asummer with LAFD and the started medical school.

It's a pretty easy test and the skill set isnt that hard either. I paid $50 for the class since it was through UCLA, but I hear you can spend up to $400 for one. ALso there are 2 week intesive classes as well. Good luck!

oh man, thanks for the link Zim, and slew thanks for the heads up. I just checked the UM site and i don't think they have a EMT class. I'll go to the firehouse or the hospital I work for and ask what the process is.

Hi James. I've been a career paramedic/firefighter for our municipal fire dept. for 24 years now and couldn't think of having a more fulfilling career. I still look forward to going to work every shift. I work 24 hour shifts, then have 2 days off. I also work part-time in our local emergency room. The money isn't great, but the satisfaction level is high.

A lot of your local hospitals provide EMT classes, as do some of your community colleges. Once you get your EMT, you can then go on to EMT-A (Advanced), and then EMT-P (Paramedic). Becoming a paramedic is quite a bit more intensive than taking the EMT classes. About 1400 hours total. For example, there is Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, medical assessments, trauma assessments, etc. and so on.

A few links for ya: NAEMT, NREMT, and EMS Village.

I you have any specific questions, please ask.

I'd be satisfied if I could sleep through half my shifts, too. 😛 😉

I'm pretty lucky. After all these years, I am at a slow station now. For many years, I'd run 4-5 calls from midnight until 7am. That sucked..... Now, if I get one call after 10pm I get p.o.'ed 🙂

i took a summer course at my local community college. Took about 6 weeks total i think. Had to pass CPR (american red cross), then learned more advanced techniques. Also learn a lot about documnetation and using a radio.

Then, you take a national registry test (I don't think it is required, but I think the vast majority of employers require you have passed this test). It's like an SAT about emergency medical care. Really cool stuff!

James, you find any classes yet?

shot you a PM cardiac. I'll be done with finals this friday and I'll start pursuing my EMT endeavors then 🙂 Got a question. What kind of hours would an EMT-B working? Is it up to that individual or do hospitals set it?

There are a lot of busy volunteer companies in your area that will provide training for free. As far as career oppurtunities i can PM you with info on some. I am a career firefighter / medic and I work just across the river from laurel, md.

No, but I'm going to try looking into getting EMT certified through the Army. I've taken 2 different medical courses through the Army, which are more battlefield oriented, but would be another usefull skillset.

My hats off to EMT's!

Ok, got it. Sounds like a good plan, James. Keep me (us) posted on your progress, and/or any questions you have when you get in class. I'm an ACLS (Advanced cardiac life support), PALS (Pediatric advanced life support), AMLS (Advanced medical life support) and a BLS (American Heart) instructor, so I'll try and help you with any questions.

he loves it though😀

That's the way of the EMS/Fire Services 😉 Soon enough, he'll be dishing out the orders, instead of taking them. I'm with a paid professional fire dept, and have 24 years of service there, and I had to take the crap for the first year or two also....Tell him to just keep his chin up and do what he's told: pretty soon he'll be doing the ordering around......
