Yesterday we had a lightning storm and I wasn't home to turn the computer off. When I got home, my desktop showed my icons fine, but the text underneath them were random symbols rather than english text characters. Application such as Netscape, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office products run fine, using english characters but Windows Explorer and other "system" type applications are displaying random symbols rather than english text characters. Does anypone know how to fix this?

Sounds kinda like a corrupt font. Honestly I'm not sure.

Getting any WFP errors in your system log? Hows the app log?
You can try a restore point or maybe a repair install. See if anyone else has some ideas first.

Check the settings on the Desktop property first. It'll tell you what font is being used by the desktop. You can even try changing the font typr to see if that'll fix it. And then converting back to the default fonts. If you can't at least try restore.

I don't think that a lightning storm alone would do this, it sounds like some sort of virus to me, actually. Or, were you implying that the lightning storm crashed/rebooted the computer, and when it came back up, the fonts/text-display was strangely corrupted? In that case, most likely, it sounds as though your registry was corrupted.
