Anyone Hear of Stripping Page File across Multiple Hard drives ?

this is true, however, it only works at twice the transfer speed of the slowwest drive ... Also, the "seek" time would be that of the slowwest drive.

Chances are, your old 10GB drive is probably MUCH slowwer than current drives. It probably has horrible seek times and even more horrible transfer rates.

Assuming the one that isn't 10GB is a somewhat modern drive, it will likely be faster on it's own without striping the page file.
 
So there wouldn't be any point to keep the 10 GB HD just for the swap file ?

How would you set it up if I did keep it with my new 250 GB HD and DVD Writer on the cables ?
 
Got my pagefile on a WD Caviar 21200 1.3gig HD! Beat that!

I got a gig of ram I just keep that drive around to brag at people complaing about 10-40 gig drives 🙂
 
I hear different things about 2 Hard drives and 1 DVD - Writer saying if a HD is on the same cable as a CD or DVD ROm it will slow it down alot, and other people say if you want the swap file on a Different drive to have it on a Different IDE Channel ?

IDE has had 'independent device timing' for a long time, so simply connecting an optical drive won't slow down a HD on the same wire.
The only time you may potentially notice degraded HD performance is when you are loading form or burning to an optical drive at high speed (8x DVD or higher) because the information from the optical drive has to compete with the HD for time on the wire.

Ideally, your swap file should be on the fastest drive you have. Your money is best spent on more RAM rather than beefing up your drives if slow swapping is a problem.
 
I definitely wouldn't want to risk having the swap file on striped drives. Try it with the swap file on the 10GB drive and see how it goes - easy enough to put it back on your main drive if it turns out to be too slow.

ive heard of people doing this, but i have also heard of a lot of people doing this and having major problems with windows not allowing them
 
Having a swap file on another drive is NOT striping it. It's just having two swap files. If one drive is in use, chances are the other will be used in a swap write. That's all.

The man who says its speed will be colossally slow compared to the 250gb drive in it speaks sense - listen to him.

Still not convinced? Download hdtach and benchmark the two drives.

Don't hit anyone with the 10gb when you throw it out.. 😛
 
I think some people are WAY too anal about having a zillion partitions to put things. Keep your 10GB for some temp storage, maybe as a backup drive, but don't worry about your swap file. I doubt you'd notice any performance difference anyway.
 
Do you mean putting windows paging file on it? On system->Advanced->Performance you can set the capacity used for Paging files. YOu can set all drives to use no paging file and just dedicate the 10GB drive for paging files.

whould this be better ? if so what should I make the page file size 2 GB ok ?

If you need a 2GB pagefile, as posted previously in this thread, get more memory. I use two of the god's of all memory hogs, video editing and spline base animation software, and 1GB of physical memory never really hits 'full'. So, no need for pagefile overkill. If you are getting messages about low memory, it is issue other than pagefile size.
 
I've got XP Pro installed on a Raptor with the page file on a SATA Seagate 7200.7.
* Better performance with the page file on the 10000rpm Raptor?
* Better performance with the page file on a different channel but with the 7200rpm Seagate?
