I heard its a pretty good private university in Michigan for computer engineering or any other engineering. Anyone have an opinion or a story to tell?

Kettering (formerly General Motors Institute or GMI) is an amazing engineering school. However, it is also pretty much only an engineering school. Also, it's in Flint, MI, where the most exciting thing to do is to study to become and engineer. I considered Kettering when I was looking at colleges (it was high on my list in fact) but I decided against it since effectively the only way to change majors was to transfer to a different college. It's a very good thing for me that I decided against Kettering as I am now an International Business Major. Basically, unless you are 100% certain that you will not change majors, don't go to Kettering. Kettering is an excellent school, but it's scope is severely limited.

Agreed. They WILL make you an intelligent engineer, and you WILL have no social life! They have one of the strictest educational programs I've ever heard of, along with a require 2 years of co-op, or something like that (don't hold me to that). Consequently, one of the most intelligent people I have ever met graduated from there. I'm not talking above average intelligence. He was an absolute genius. I worked with him for 5 months at my co-op, and he amazed me nearly every day. Made me feel really stupid, and I'm supposed to be near the top of my class! So anyway, Kettering is definitely worth considering.

Not that Kettering isn't an excellent school, but being from the area, I've known some real dorks who got in there. Granted, this was during Kettering's transitional days, when it was still known as GMI and after General Motors stopped financially supporting the program. There was a real chance it would close at one time, which is why I think they lowered their academic standards for a couple years in order to keep enrollment up.

But, that hasn't been true since the school became Kettering. Its one of the strongest and most respected engineering programs in the country. Unless I'm mistaken, they do in fact now have business or engineering management graduate programs, but you're right that its all about engineering in one way or another.

I go to Michigan Tech. Really good engineering school. Kids get like 9 offers when they graduate. They get around $55,000 a year now plus a signing bonus. School is like $6,000-$12,00 a year tuition for instate or out of state. Kettering is in a crap-hole city.
