My parents are getting their kitchen redone and putting in a bosch gas cooktop, dishwasher, microwave and oven. They want to buy service plans for everything (mainly because all their current appliances are broken to some point and its ridiculously expensive to repair). The stuff seems very well built and according to the appliance shop (high end place) they were hot selling items. Any idea if its just rebadged trash or actually good?

Some is rebaged. Can;t remember the name.

But if its really high end and the warranty is not to much then go for it. But if tis a regualr not top of the line, like touch screen and other newwer more costly items, then skip it.

Its all midline stuff, they still want the warranties though. The cooktop they have now was like 600 when they bought it but the part needed to replace the electronic ignition is 400 installed, makes sense just to pay the 90 bucks for 5 years of piece of mind.

Before getting a service plan consider the cost of that plan vs the cost of fixing one appliance once. If you get the plan and nothing breaks for 5 years (which is likely if it's decent quality) then you just lost a whole bunch of money and you are paying to fix something that did not break. I would just stick with whatever warrenty comes with it.

They already dealt with spending major $$$ to get stupid things fixed (microwave broke, oven broke, cooktop broke, etc). They do lots of cooking so everything gets subjected to a lot more abuse than you would think it would.

Fixing any microwave that isn't a commercial unit is just plain silly. Bosch has very good dishwashers, decent refrigerators and, poor cook tops/ranges.

If the reason they are going with everything from the same company is they like the unified look, there are many cheaper mid range appliances that use panel systems to give the same unified appearance.

If they like having a comprehensive service plan for convenience, they can buy a commercial service plan that will cover all their appliances regardless of manufacturer. Or, they could just go with commercial appliances that will last the rest of their lives with household use and require little to no repairs.

I know someone who owns a HVAC business. He told me often how he made a killing off extended warranty plans. 400 customers x $150 a year, and only 20 of them needing work = major profit.

They dont bother fixing the microwaves, just replacing every 2-3 years gets annoying. My dad was saying something about just getting a total kitchen repair plan from amex or BoA, I wasnt sure of anything after that. They would go commercial, but that would require gutting the entire kitchen, this is just replacing appliances.

How are their cooktops poor? It seemed pretty high quality in the store.

The cook tops have poor control mechanisms that cost big bucks to replace. They also are difficult to clean which is the number one factor in appliances breaking down.

Went through this when we were building a house last year. Like someone else said the Bosch dishwashers are good, but the rest of their appliances are so so at best. The cooktops are probably the worst "high end" cooktops we looked at.

We ended up going with a combo of Wolf, Sub Zero and Fisher & Paykel.

If your parents are looking at midrange have them look at the Icon line of Electrolux appliances. Electrolux also has a line they sell in either Lowe's or Home Depot, but they are not of the same quality as the Electrolux Icon line. The Icon line is normally only shown at "appliance showrooms" and builder's supply type places.
