What causes them?

I don't believe they are due to 'bumping' them against something.

I've always been told it happens when you haven't been getting enough calcium. I think it was just a trick to get me to drink my milk when I was little though.

btw, it worked, and I'm gonna use it on my kids :)

Yeah it's pretty normal as far as I know, especially for toenails. Looking at my fingernails and toenails now I don't seem to have any spots, but I remember seeing them years ago when I was still growing. Maybe it's related to aging or something or malnutition of some sort.

leukonychia

All sorts of assorted causes. Most of them quite harmless. The moral of the story is that if you have a few, or can correlate them to trauma events, no problem. If you have a sudden sharp spike in frequency and density, you might fancy a chat with your GP.

zinc deficiency. the white spots go away if you take a multivitamin or zinc supplement. zinc picolinate works best.

Odd, could swore I'd read before they were from calcium deposits, if you get an excess of it.

why should I take his word? he doesn't reference any of his "facts", which is a bit of a red flag.

(I trust my own experience. i.e., I had white spots on ginfernails, read in several books they can be due to zinc deficiency, took zinc, spots went away, stopped taking zinc, spots came back, started taking zinc/ a multivitamin, spots went away for good.)
