Ok, I'm going to hazard a wild guess.

At $400, the equivalent ATI card is the X1950XTX.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2821&p=8

A single X1950XTX is 18.5 fps.

The 7900GT is not on the list, but voltmodded it comes very close to a 7900GTX. So let's just say that it would get 13 fps.

So can 2 x 7900GT voltmodded for $400 overcome the 18.5 fps of the X1950XTX?

I'm thinking it can, but only by a little bit. And then you have to deal with possible SLI issues, additional voltmodding, better HSFs for both cards, etc, so in the end it really wouldn't be worth it, right?

EDIT Based on the other benchmarks, it looks like the 7900GT SLI could easily best the X1950XTX.

Unless you already have a GT, I'd get a X1950XTX over two 7900GTs. Bigger framebuffer, less space concern, and probably better performance with better image quality, without voiding warranty.

Yeah - for the $400 range, get a 8800GTS and stomp the 7900GTs into the ground.

go buy a dell 10% off coupon on ebay to drop that 8800 to ~$380ish.. that would be a better deal than 2x7900gts.. (possibly the best performance / dollar right now)

for $325, its not a bad deal either.

or 1900xt for ~$200ish if you don't need the extra speed..

I have this setup right now, I only did the GPU volt mod to 1.4V, just starting to OC... but here's what I have so far out of the box:

stock speeds (500/1500), 2xEVGA 7900 GT KO, voltmodded:
3DMark 03 - 28146
3DMark 05 - 11284

In F.E.A.R. performance test, I ran 4x AA/16x AF @ 1680x1050, FPS min. 40, avg. 63, max 158.

After some OC'ing (GPU=640, mem 800)
3DMark 03 wouldn't finish, although I could ESC out, so not really sure what the problem is... it just stays at the black screen between game benchmarks, doesn't do anything; any ideas?
3Dmark 05 - 12240

F.E.A.R. = 1680x1050, 4X AA/16X AF, FPS min. 47, avg. 75, max 177

Performance difference definitely noticeable in higher resolutions, higher AA/AF, etc. I got the 2nd 7900 GT KO for $205, so not a bad deal at all.

Not voltmodded, but I do have two factory overclocked 7900GT's, eacg with a 512mb frame buffer, and they perform very nicely indeed in SLI.
