Anyone have their own breathalyzer?

How accurate are they? Any good brands in particular? At worst they seem like something that'll be interesting to see when drinking, at best they can be something that can save a costly DUI..

My friend had one he paid over $100. After a week of use it started giving bad results. Someone that wasn't drinking would have higher BAC than someone who was clearly drunk. Don't trust the commercial ones, imo.

They don't work if you breath in it right after drinking. It is recommended to wait 15 minutes, something drunks at a party rarely do. At least this is how it was with my roomates.

You can get the recalibrated for around $30 or so last time I checked.

edit* even when used correctly I think they have to get calibrated every year or two.

I have one of thoes little pocket ones they sell at brookstone.
My friend got it for xmas last year and somehow I ended up with it on new years eve.

It didn't work for sh!t and should not be relied upon for anything.

my friend got one from thinkgeek.com however it has just turned into a contest to see who can blow the highest 🙂

(i could be wrong from regarding where he got it but it cost him like 20 bucks)

MADD seems to think they are a bad idea, claiming they are not accurate at all.

Pretty easy to do, just rinse with whisky and you are the winner.

If you are looking for something serious, you are going to spend at least $300 if not more. Avoid "novelty" BA testers. Either way, they have to be calibrated after a number of uses. I believe calibration at our local PoPo is like $110.

i have an alcomate that i bought from ebay and i think it works pretty good. the level seems to be pretty relative to the amount i drink.
