Anyone have the Klipsch ultra 5.1s? How do they compare to the logitech z560s?

I am thinking of upgrading from my logitechs...anyone have these? any problems with them like the pro media 5.1's? just trying to find out if the center channel is the only upgrade that i would notice and if the quality of the klipsch are as good?

thanks

JC

lend me some money man!!! its not worth it to just upgrade from the z560's to the ultra 5.1's.

pcgamer reviewed them and said the klipsch's are better for music, and all around audio listening, while the z-560's are good for games, rap, alternative, and rock (sub plays a factor here)

Yea... I have the Klipsh 5.1's. I have friends with the logitechs, and for all around everyday music listening as well as casual movie watching the Klipsh's win hands down IMO.

I've got the 5.1's and a friend has the 560's. Sorry but the Klipsch win hands down. The highs are cleaner on the klipsch and make it much better for all around listening. The Logitech sound a bit "muddy" and just not as clear. The Klipsch just seem to have better overall range. The sub for the Klipsch hangs with anything you'll play, so i wouldn't factor that in too much.

Which is meaningless.

They've whored their name out to so many steaming piles of crap that it no longer carries any weight for me. Have a doubt? Check out ANY DVD/AV forum.

here's the maxpc review..

The original Klipsch Promedia 5.1's are still among our all time favorite speakers. The front ported subwooder, ....blah blah more about the originals.....

The overal sound reproduction for teh new Ultras is spot on. The new sub handled our 20hz to 22khz frequency test with out any probs at all, and sounded better at the high end than any other multimedia speaker we've ever tested. Midranges are excellent as well, and the crossover from midranges to low end is absolutely seamless.

But, the new Ultras system does have aminor flaw, which first became apparent when we ran our pink noise test. We play pink noise at dfferent frequencies through out the audible spectrum. At the high end and midranges, the speakers performed flawlessly. However, ath the extreme low end, we noticed hints of belching from the sub. we assumed the belching was due to the intense nature of the test , and would be unnoticable in real world tests.

Unfortuneately, we encountered it again when we fired up QAuake III to test gaming audio. In the Q3DM17 map, we test overall audio respons by fireing both the rocker luancher and the and the shotgun at max volume. White the response wasn't as punchy with the Logitech Z-560's, it's still totally within an acceptable range. The shotgun and rocket weren't the problem, though. The background hum in DM17 caused the woofer to occasionally belch when the speakers were at high volume. The belching isn't loud, and most folkds wouldn't notice it, but we did. It's not a deal breaker, but it's not ideal.

We really like the redesigned control pod. The old accelerationg volume knob, which would blast to max volume if hit the wrong way, has been replaced by a more stnadard non accelerating knob. The new ultras sitll don't inclue a digital decoder, which we consider a necessity for any speakers to receive a perfect score. WE'd also like to have a remote control for use in home theater rigs. But despite the flaws, the ProMedia Ultra 5.1s are great speakers. 9/10

Sorry about all the typos....I typed it up while looking at the mag.

I do know that THX certification is crap and it's not to be used as a measurement for performance; but it the products has to meet certain aesthetic as well as performance critiria before THX is paid so companies could plaster the THX logo on the packaging.

Out of curiosity, do you have specific examples? I have first-hand experience working with THX and while money definitely talks with them, getting their certification is not a cakewalk.

How do speakers qualify for THX cert?

There are different levels of THX certification for speakers as with pretty much everything. In a nutshell they have to met certain standards for distortian, freq response and so on. You can look at the THX site for all the details I believe. Suffice to say the standards for computer speakers are no where near those for upper level HT stuff.

I tried looking for criteria, but I couldn't find any hard facts. Most of it consists of the idea that it should sound good.

Only some of the requirements are spec-level. A goot bit of it is subjective which is what makes attaining the cert such a pain in the ass.
