They showed the press conf. after the 1500 meter race last night. Hedrick was kind of speechless after davis made his comment about Hedrick not shaking his hand after he won the 1000 meter race. Hedrick then responded about being disappointed with Davis for not participating in the team speed skating event.

I wish I had seen the entire press conference, unless it was really short. Hedricks looked TENSE.

Hedrick was not happy. I wanted him and Shani to hug, shake hands and make amends but that would be to easy.

He was downright pissed, but was trying to laugh it off. I think he even said "typical shani" under his breath after davis' comment.

The Costas / Davis interview would be a good one to see, it Costas did get his feathers ruffled.

I can't decide if I like Shani Davis or not. In a lot of his interviews he seems like a really nice intelligent person. Then there are the interviews where he acts like a pissed off gangsta. Plus he lost a lot of points in my book for pulling out of the team event, and the way he handled the whole thing.

I want to like him, but I just can't 100%.

Davis has ZERO room to talk about not being a team player. I was thrilled when that Italian guy beat him in the 1500. Look at all the success Hedrick has had with all the races he's doing, then Davis pulls out of the team event so he doesn't get tired or whatever for his individual race. Ass.

:frown:

The worst part about this was that if he made this decision early enough, maybe the US would have had a chance to prepare better for the race. I don't know if they have anyone else as strong, but at least it wouldn;t have been a last minute substitution.

He definitely put himself ahead of the team. I'm glad he lost. Both he and Bode suck.

The same can be said about Michelle Kwan as well. First she gets on the Olympic team without having to qualify. She knew she wasn't healthy enough before the Olympics. She denied Emily Hughes 3 things: a spot on the original team, of participating in the opening ceremonies, and enough time to prepare for the Olympics.

I'm embarrassed that Davis represented the USA. The guy is a first class pompous asshole. Honestly, it doesn't bother me too much that he pulled out of the team event. If the other events meant more to him, and he felt the only way to be competitive in them was to only focus on them, then I'm okay with that. However, the way he has handled himself with the team and the press is downright assinine. I've yet to see/hear him speak without acting like a total jackoff.

As for Hedrick, I think he's done an average job of rising above it. He lets Davis bait him into back-and-forths. I'm not saying I wouldn't get sucked into it either, but oh well.

Agree 100%

One thing I missed though was the Costas interview. I didn't know Davis pissed him off, too. What happened?

Oh please. Enough of this already. I'm not even a figure skating fan but this is crap. The same thing happened to Kwan in 1994 and she did not get to go at all. No 1994 Olympics appearance period. At least, Emily Hughes gets to go and to participate, even if she did miss some of it. Kwan deserved a chance for what was most likely her last shot at a gold in the Olympics, after being the U.S. face of the sport for so many years. She was gracious to have pulled out so early and give someone else a shot rather than carrying a false hope to the end.

As for Davis, it is very strange that in some interviews he appears to be a genuinely gracious, likeable guy who is overjoyed to have done so well. At other times, he seems very distant and aloof, like he could care less about the whole experience or anyone or anything but himself for that matter. He's a bit hard to figure out. Is he selfish for not participating in the team sport? Yes. Was he vindicated by winning the gold in the 1000? Yes, also. If he had participated in the team event and then failed to medal or not gotten a gold in the 1000, he probably would have been labeled a "disappointment" by the media. But he needs to just let this whole Hedrick thing go and just be done with it. Just kiss and make up already, "Brokeback"-speed skating style. :p

EDIT: I wouldn't quite say Hedrick is free of blame in this whole affair either, though he is on a somewhat "higher" road (not quite THE "high road"). As people have pointed out here, he's allowed Davis to bait him into a lot of the back and forth. I understand his anger and disappointment with Shani's decision but he probably should have just wished Davis well after Shani's 1000 win and just managed a few terse "no comment"-'s to the media. By failing to congratulate Davis, Hedrick, to a certain extent, set up the media to blow this entire thing out of proportion.

Actually... He says he didn't pull out of the race. US Skating told him he was going to do it and he said "no I'm not". He had never planned on running that race. What's more, the race was the night before his best event. I would have said no too. And don't forget that Hendreck already had his gold medal when he decided to get rightous with Davis and make him out to be selfish.

Pls not this stuff about michelle kwan again ... she did not get on the olympic team without qualify, she had to do her thing and the olympic comittee okay'd her. If she was not good enough then she would not have made the team, plain and simple.

I'm sure you would say michelle kwan was selfish if she stayed on the team and got anything less than gold ... but now that she pulled out, she's still selfish for being on the team.
