HP 5510

Anyone have any experience with this all-in-one? I'm considering getting one, particularly for the document feeder to scan tons of documents to pdf. Its the cheapest out there with a full-page feeder and has gotten pretty good reviews on circuitcity.

The lowest price is Newegg @ $136 or Newegg refurbed @ $89.

The biggest problem with this particular machine is that the door to the access the ink cartridges is pretty flimsy and easy to break off. If you go to a retail store to check one out, half of them will likely have their doors broken off. Once this happens, it will refuse to print unless you tape down the switch that tells the machine the door is broken.

Other than that, it is a pretty decent machine for office work. I rather like the text quality on the HP inkjets. The replacement carts on this printer aren't all that bad either, if you are mainly printing text. The 56 carts are #20 a pop and print around 450 pages or so if you don't print at high quality, or $36 for two. If you can get hold of some $10 off a $30 purchase coupons from Staples, OfficeMax or Office Depot then you can get the price per cartridge down into the Canon range. The color cartridge is pretty expensive ($35 bucks) but I rarely have to change mine in my HP 2210 (which uses the same carts as the 5510), especially since I have it default to printing in grayscale using the black cartdige only in the drivers, which keeps you from using up your color cartridge during normal printing. If you don't check the option to only use the black cartridge in the drivers it uses the color cart to make some gray tones, which eats up you color over time.

I'll probably just use it for scanning and b&w copying, and use cheap b&w refill ink for that. You mentioned staples so I looked them up and they had it for $150 and a $25 rebate that gift card offer that expired yesterday. No problem tho, if I get it I can wait until a $30 off $150 comes out.

Do you use the doc feeder, and like it?

The one I have uses the same print mechanism, but doesn't have the doc feeder like the 5510, so I can't comment on the 5510's performance in thqat respect. I just know the 5510 from my old part time job selling printers and faxes at an office supply store. It seemed to work okay on the store displays, but I'm not sure if it holds up to a lot of heavy use. If you're planning on using the doc feeder a lot, it might be worth upgrading to the 6210 model which is a bit sturdier. The 5510 is an okay model, but it always struck me as a bit flimsy for long term use.

If you look around, you might also be able to find some good deals on the discontinued 6110, which had a really nice doc feeder. It used to reatil new for $299, but since it has been replaced with the newer 6210 and 7210 models I've seen factory refurbs at Fry's and other retailers for below $150. The refurbs are always a bit iffy, but you can always return them if you buy them locally and get a lemon.

Thanks much for the feedback. Its tough to trust some review but it looks like overall people are pretty satisfied with the 5510 as compared to the 6210 and 6110. I guess the latters were hit or miss (lots of misses on the 6110), where some people seemed to get lemons but others loved them.

/edit: I forgot about fry's so I checked out outpost. They have a Canon MP750 @$99, which appears to be new and a fairly hot deal. CircuitCity still lists it at $249, amazon has it at $129 (listed as hotdeal on techbargains).

The doc feeder is 35 sheets vs. 20 and the printing quality is supposedly excellent, and no feeder issues mentioned as well. (altho in my experience all feeders never work perfectly)

Shipping is $16 so I think I'm going to call fry's tomorrow and see if its in stock.
