It goes under the 386 Enhanced section (or something like that) of system.ini.

Edit for stupidity.

I don't see anything like that...

I see it in System.ini though

K nm I already have it on... sh!t... that was my last ditch hope at performance.

I knew it was one of the two. I can never remember which, so I just look for that section.

It's not a registry hack,it's only a line you add to system.ini.

it forces windows to use the actual ram before making a swapfile .

When you have a lot of RAM, you can optimize the use of your swap file This procedure optimizes use of the swap file in Windows 98.

Open Notepad or any text editor.

Click on the File menu, and select Open. At the bottom, toggle the pull-down menu labeled "Files of type:" to All Files (*.*).

Look in the C:\WINDOWS directory for a file called system.ini.
If you can't find the file, you may need to activate a feature that will let you see hidden files. To do this:
Click on the Start menu, point to Settings, and select Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and select Show All Files Under Hidden Files.

Scroll down until you find the heading [386Enh], and add the following line or modify it, if it already exists.
ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1

Restart Windows.

if you have A LOT of ram, isn't it better if you just disable virtual memory instead of adding that line? cuz that's what i'm doing...

Even with a large amount of RAM, would leave a small amount of swap (currently 100MB with 256MB RAM) in case I run into some bad programming that needs swap space. I don't think I've ever needed more than 100MB after many months of use.

I have 512MB ready for my next system. Swap space will be set to 50MB minimum.

I'm using this already, but I'm just curious: does adding this line allow Windows 98 to take full advantage of larger amounts of memory (over 128mb)?
