I've really wanted a sugar glider forever now. There's only three things that are currently stopping me:

#1. Apparently you always need to get more than one or they get all depressed and eat their own poop till they die. And even just one ain't cheap.

#2. UNBELIEVABLY finicky diet and health concerns

#3. I still can't get confirmation on whether you can throw them in the air to watch them glide around or not.

I've known three folks who had them. Every one dies an early death. (The gliders, not the folks)

I used to have flyers.

http://webuser.bus.umich.edu/tle/boxer/boxer.html

http://www.nfsa.us (national flying squirrel association)

http://www.nfsa.us/phpBB2/

Flyers are different from sugar gliders, the nfsa site can probably list the differences better than I can.

As for flyers, they glide, not fly.

Boxer would climb things and jump off and glide down.
He would also jump from person to person and run all over you, like you were a tree.

Their diets arent too complicated, cheerios, fruits, vegetables, etc, nutriberries.

You can have one alone but you need to spend time with them.
They aren't pets to leave in their cage 24/7.
They will bond to the owner. Pairs do work as well of course - try to get them together.

My buddy and his wife have a pair of sugar gliders. Probably the worst pets ever. You can't really play with them, they sleep all day and they make the whole damn house smell. I had to spend the night over there once and slept in their front room where the cage was. They are active at night so there was no sleep for me :(

Yeah, sugar gliders are related to marsupials so they give off a strong oder.
Flyers don't have that issue. They are nocturnal, but the ones ive seen would come out to play around 6pm or so.

You can certainly play with flyers, they are very very active.

Ours would learn to climb one person and jump to another when they called.
They would climb curtains or anything else and jump across the room.
They are very smart, Boxer actually figured out how to open the latch of his cage.
