I think there are numerous services that, for a fee, will monitor a domain name for expiration then register it for you.

Have you been able to get a domain this way? Which company did you use?

I did something like this from Dotster. com a couple of years ago but never heard anything again for several domains that I was interested in.

well, I wouldn't hold your breath on backordered domains... because for one, it requires that the original owner lets it expire long enough for the company to notice, and two, it requires that someone who may be looking for the same domain name to not get it before you.

Personally, I've registered my domain name for 5 years, because it only cost about 6 dollars more than 2 years at the time. Not that anyone would really want my domain name, but I plan on renewing it when I got a little less than two years left. I've seen too many friend's domains snatched up by those loser sites that offer to let you bid on old domain names... selling them for not a penny less than a grand...

They (the sites that backorder domains) must work if they were able to snatch away your friends' domain names.

no, because they were all those cheezy advertising sites that just try to sell domains back to people.... they probably just did a search of recently expired domain names and then had some way to see the traffic on the site to know if it's worth getting. The sites that will check the domain names for you have just as much chance at getting it as some other site... which it why I say it's probably not worth it. The fact that the person could easily have the domain registered for a decade and the fact that there is only a CHANCE of you getting it if and when it becomes available isn't worth paying what, 20-30 bucks, PLUS the registration fee? Cripes, if you have that kind of money to play around with, send some my way.

I have NEVER seen a recenlty expired domain that is actually available for sale.

The registrars hold on to them for a LONG time.

I used to mark my calendar for domains that were going to expire. Then I tried to register them and they were never available.

I have had some of my domains expire and I tried to register them and I couldn't even do it! The only option was to renew, even though it was expired!!!

There's a trick to getting these domains but I don't know what it is.
