Anyone have really random moments of smelling things that aren't there?

I was sitting here typing notes in a student lounge and all of a sudden I smelled the scent of wet evergreens, like I was hiking in the forest right after a fresh rainshower. It brought me back to the time when I hiked in the Adirondacks after a rain shower, climbing my way up to Mt. Marcy, trudging my way through a dense and mud-laden, but spectacular, evergreen forest.

I just kind of sat back and let it all soak in. Ah, good memories. Can't believe that was five years ago... how bittersweet life is...

usually smelling wet forest smells when they are not there precludes an event where a 350 lb naked hairy hillman carrying a pine comb and a tennis racket jumping out and asking you to play ball

If you smell burning, and nothing is burning, you might have a neurological disorder. If things tase time burning, you might be watching the simpsons.

Yes for the past two weeks I was smelling cigarette smoke everywhere. I would comment to my wife about it, and she didn't smell it. I was very stuffed up at the time, mild sinus infection. So I did a little reading online and saw that one cause of olfactory hallucinations is sinus infections. My nose has now cleared up and the "smell" has gone away.

I catch whiffs of shit sometimes that isn't there...or is it? I have cats and sometimes they have migrators that hang on and make it out of the basement.

did you climb it during the summer or the fall? i'm there this summer.

the Adirondacks are amazingly aromatic. to me it's a combination of pine and cedar.
but i can't say as i can think up the smell, so i have a sachet wood shavings throw pillow to remind me of it.

I get this all the time. and the scent is triggered by a vivid memory, or visa versa.

I think we're superheros with really lame powers.

OMG it's a Mosh Mosh!

I was there five years ago... I think during the fall. And yup, definitely aromatic. When I was there the portion of the trail that was just below the summit of Mt. Marcy had pretty much turned into a foggy lake. The only trail was on this wooden walkway that was made out of long branches laid down on the ground that resisted sinking into the mud. It was hard, but it was worth it.
