My wife and I are currently on t-mobile. our contract ends at the end of the month and I want to switch to pre paid plans. I may goto boost or metroPCS but my wife is happy with t-mo coverage.

it seems like many people have problems keeping their number when they switch to prepaid carriers.
does anyone have any experience with this?

By law, you can keep your number. I have not had any problems.

Only problem you would have is if you entered the information from your account wrong when porting. They need everything exact. If you are going from T-mobile postpaid to t-mobile prepaid they will transfer you around a little bit to their special department that takes care of that. (their prepaid department is in some foreign country Philippines maybe?) You will deal with the foreign prepaid department.

The carriers won't typically do it. The prepaid lines are kept separate.

You can ask and you might be able to find a way, especially if you're staying with the same carrier.

I ported my wife's line from postpaid to prepaid on AT&T without a problem. However this was many many years ago. I actually went to an AT&T store to do this, as I didn't want to deal with the phone rep and risking something goes wrong and us losing the number or something similar.

I noticed that you said your wife likes T-Mobile coverage. You need to make sure that postpaid and prepaid coverage for T-Mobile are identical. They're definitely not the same with AT&T.
