Anyone have odd experiences with higher refresh rates?

I normally run my Sony G420S at 1280x960 with 100 Hz refresh rate but I've noticed that I can see a "waviness" occuring. Shouldn't this only happen when the refresh is too low?

When I turn the refresh down to 85 Hz it seems easier to look at.

What does your manual say the maximum safe refresh is for your monitor at 1280x960 ? The max goes down as resolution goes up.

Overclocking your monitor can lead to failarity.

It supports 100 Hz. That is one reason I purchased that particular model--it is known for doing higher refresh rates than normal and doing it well.

Recommended: 1600 x 1200 @ 85 Hz

i would RECOMEND running it at the RECOMENDED resolution and refresh rate

why you ask? because running it higher then recomended WILL shorten the life of the monitor because it puts more wear and tear on the monitor and the gun, sometimes causeing "odd expirences with higher refresh rates"
also 1280x960 is a strange resolution,

What monitor is this? I have a Samsung 900NF that I run at 1280x1024@100Hz all day long. That is the recommended hz also. I wish they still made this monitor 🙁

Check for external sources of magnetic interference(anything plugged in). I had a heater behind the wall and in the next room cause the effect you describe.

I notice strange effects as well on my 753DF when running "higher" refresh rates...for example, 90Hz at 1024x768, or 72Hz at 1280x960. Basically...it seems that the center of the screen (vertically) has different pixel spacing (more "squished") than the left and right sides of the screen...it's quite frustrating, and basically prevents me from using those rates. 85Hz at 1024x768 is still fine, but 60/65Hz at 1280x960...no.

1280x960 isn't a weird reso... it's the next 4:3 reso after 1024x768, 1280x1024 is the weird one that just happens to be the standard.

i have the same monitor at same refresh and resolution. its fine for me though. waviness has to do with "moire" settings. find it on the controls for the monitor, either enable and set to value, or turn it to 0.

Sounds like a moire problem,I`m running 90Hz@1280x1024 on my monitor with no problems ,the only other thing I can suggest is the quality of your video cable may be a factor.

No, 1280X960 is normal, 1280X1024 is strange.

That is correct. For CRT's the aspect ratio is 4:3. Which means the ratio between pixels horizontally x pixels vertically. If you try to stretch that ratio to 1280x1024 (5:4), you may get distorted information or pixels on the screen.

It could also be your video card. My 22" CRT that I sold recently did 1600x1200@100hz. That was fine on my Radeon card via the laptop, but on my old GF4 Ti4600, it was quite fuzzy. I guess the RAMDAC or whatever comes into play, etc.
