So I'm building a wicked cheap system for my fiance's little brother/family christmas present. The kid went out and bought morrowind and tried to play it on his K6-II 450 with 128mb of ram and onboard graphics. Yeah, so that didn't work.

I'm trying to slap the system together on the cheap because I don't have that much money either, but I still want to leave some upgrade room and get morrowind running alright. I've got 2x256 crucial pc2700 for him. Gonna snag a cheap hard drive, and I have my old faithful xp1800+ dlt3c that I'm going to modestly overclock in the system.

Which leaves me with the motherboard/ram. I'm going to upgrade my card probably in a few months or so and I can donate my old ti4200 to him for his birthday or something...but I he'll need a video card in the mean time. I've been thinking about snagging one of the IGP nforce boards (probably the biostar) and just using the onboard gf4 mx graphics. Yeah, I know they're only dx7 and he'll have no pretty water for awhile...but will it run the game at 1024x768 (menus are hard to read under that) acceptably? I had a geforce2 mx400 in a similar setup to this, and it was a bit choppy but playable at 8x6.

Morrowind is an inefficient hog, even my current system's ti4600 doesn't run it as fast as I like...but I'd just like him to be able to handle this game reasonably well.

Anyone have good experience with this?

I ran Morrowind on the original Radeon Mobility 32MB on an XP1700 laptop. Couldn't crank up much inthe way of details, but it ran.

My mx440 64mb ran at 1024 on medium settings(although, low visability). It is such a beautiful game, even compared to current times. I would love to play through it with max settings one day.

My girlfriend's little brother ran Morrowind for a while on a Slot 1 Athlon 800 and a GeForce2 GTS 32MB. I gave him the game (I was long done with it) and watched him play for a while. It was doing alright. Settings weren't maxed or anything and it didn't look as good as it did on my Ti 4200 when I played it. But it looked pretty good and played well enough, but with occasional noticeable frame rate dips. FPS dips are more acceptable in that kind of a game anyway.

The comp i'm typing on has an Asus mobo (it's a compaq so i dont know what model) with nForce 2 chipset and graphics. I occasionally play ES3 and it runs it at 10x7, all details, and with 2x AA enabled. No pretty water yes, but it's very smooth.

However, this is with a 2600+. But it shouldnt make too much of a difference if you're going to oc anyways.
