Anyone have mechanical experience with a '92 Ranger or a car with discs + manual hubs?

Hey,
I'm trying to help my brother out for his birthday with his car. He wants me to get his rotors turned but I'm having some difficulty. When I take my caliper off, my rotor nearly falls off. With his the caliper and hub are off but it won't budge, do I have to take some of the inner hub so to speak off as well?

You should buy a shop manual.

Taking apart locking hubs ( I am assuming 4x4) can result in a huge mass of parts that can be overwhelming to reassemble. Manual hubs are bad enough, auotmatic hubs are the absolute worst.
 
I Haynes manaul and I have looked that thing up and down and no where does the sob tell me about taking off the rotors.

It's been a while, but if I recall correctly...

Once you get the hub lock off, there is either a large nut or a snap ring (most likely) that has to be removed for the hub/rotor to come off. Take a rag and wipe out the grease... You should see something.

Wow. I've never seen a Haynes manual that didn't give those instructions. That really surprises me.
 
It really varies for any vehicle. I think your ranger is going to be somewhat similar to my 92 Explorer that is 4wd but I have automatic locking hubs and you have manual hubs, so maybe its not all that similar. .. shrug.

At any rate, yes, you need to remove the inner hub and a large locking nut that is probably held from moving with either a cotter pin or a woodruff key. Your front axle is probably either a dana 28 or a dana 35 and you can buy sockets to remove the nut. After removing the nut, you should have an outer bearing which rides the race on the inner hub of the rotor and also an inner bearing which is behind a dust seal on the rotor. You'll need to drive the dust seal out to remove the inner bearing. All of this happens after you remove the 4wd locking mechanism in front of the locking nut.

Again, this is just how it is on my 92 X, but is probably somewhat similar to your setup.

By contrast, the manual hubs on my 89 toyota 4x4 are much much more stout, but also have these damn conical washers which are a bane to my existence..... And are also nothing like the hubs on my Explorer..
