Anyone have Mass Effect (1) on steam? Couple questions?

I'm thinking of picking this up since I saw some one playing the second one and looked pretty awesome. But I wanted to play the first one first. While gamecopyworld seems to just list a simple disk check for ME2, ME1 seems to have a much worse situation. Shitty install credits with securom. I simply won't buy a game with anything like that.

I understand the steam version just has steam. Can anyone confirm this? Does the offline mode work well with it?

Also, how big is the game install folder? I'm stuck on a shitty dial up connection so I'll probably have to download it somewhere else and make a backup to bring home and install on my PC, but I wonder how much space it needs for that?

Offline mode works fine, I just tried it and it runs fine. Just gotta tell steam to go in offline mode.

The game is big, I don't know how big unfortunately. It took me awhile to download and I have 12mb dsl. I haven't the time right this sec to go searching for the folder, but if someone told me where it was I can give a more definite answer.

Also, if you have vista or win7 there is an issue getting it to run. What you have to do is create a shortcut on desktop/start menu and then 'run as administrator'. Otherwise the game will fail to start.

It's a very good game so I definitely recommend picking it up!

It does not have install limits but there is more DRM than just steam. It does some kind of authentication the first time you runt he game, I had to disable UAC in win7 and vista to get it past that point.

I was curious on this, and ended up googling like I should have in the first place. The value forums have a post from BioWare saying it only has steam: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=771407

One person suggested in that thread suggested that on vista a directx install script runs at the beginning which may be what was tripping UAC up for you. I don't really know of course.

It's a directx install that triggers UAC. ME1 on Steam doesn't have any additional DRM.

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up. Kind of weird it only happens in ME, I've seen other games install DX without any problems from the UAC.

I've been playing ME1 for the last week or so and I have to say it is really cool. It was a little slow and boring at first but once you get your ship it's an awesome game. Well worth the trouble.

I have ME on steam, too. I already play it for a while and quite enjoy it.
But I just can't set the res to 1920x1200 in setting menu, it's really annoys me becasue tons of games can support to 1920x1200 res, anyone knows how to set the res at least to 1080P??:\

There's a scrollbar on the resolution menu that's kind of hard to see. It's just the arrow buttons. Mine had 1920x1200 on the list once I realized that the list was scrollable.

lol, damnit. I played the whole game at like 1280 because I couldn't figure that out. Part of the time I had black bars so I could only see a small portion. :\

Heh. I couldn't find it. So I went to the widescreen gaming forums, where they said it was native. So I looked again. Hard. It's really not a good design, if people aren't even noticing it.

Don't forget to keep your "save" files in the first game because they apply towards how your game starts in the second game.

Thanks for DarkForceRising's remind.^_^ Finally, I find how to set the res to 1920x1200, the scrollbar is really unobvious in the setting menu.
Now I can really enjoy this game.:D

Hell, we've all done stuff like that I'm sure. I never played any of the ME games. I probably should get around to it but I have enough in the queue.

FWIW, I gave Mass Effect a shot and it jumped right up to the top of my queue (which is rather long).

I wasn't aware of any DRM in Mass Effect on Steam...not that I looked though :p

It works just fine and it's a great game. A great game, which I need to get around to finishing.

I like ME1 on Steam, but it's buggy. It's crashed *several* times on me and if I alt-tab out or any other window pops up, the game is unrecoverable.

That's odd - I haven't had an issue with crashing (or alt-tabbing)..
