Before I talk to my eye doctor, I figure I would check with Encyclopedia ATOT to get some word of mouth experience. So if anyone has info regarding these:

1. Is it feasible to have the surgery on a Friday late afternoon and then be back for work on Monday? (what was your recovery time?)

2. About how much does it cost for both eyes (I don't plan on paying 150 bucks to have it done by Dr. Nick)

3. Is there anyone from Michigan that had it done? What was the name of the doc and would you recommend him to others?

most will say its piece of cake do it, but have up to three different opinions preferably not from private practice doctor but a dr. eye and ear hospital where he gets same salary whether or not he does the surgery, because for some people it might cause damage. private practice doctor wants to make $$$ you will not get honest opinion. so if your neck of the woods have eye hospital clinic go there

I had LASIK surgury done and I was feeling pretty normal again the next day. If your job involves staring at a monitor though, I'd reocmmend you give yourself more time. My surgury was done 2 years ago so the prices have radically changed. And my results weren't as great as I expected... I don't have 20/20 but at least I got rid of my glasses.

I had the surgery about a year ago, and I love the results. Recovery time was quick. I was out for 2 days with eye-shields. After that, I could take them off during the day, but had to sleep with them on for 2 weeks. At the time, the surgery cost me $1300 an eye, but it was well worth it.

EDIT: As far as results go, I went from 20/600 in both eyes to 20/20 in my right eye and 20/15 in my left eye.

I had my surgery at 1:00 in the afternoon and could have easily gone the work the next day. It was no problem at all. I wish I could have done it sooner but I was scared. I highly recommend it.

I paid something like $1100 I think. Maybe $1300. (That price was for both eyes)

BTW, I went from 20/650 vision to 20/15 in less than 24 hours. I haven't had any of the side effects that I was warned about. The doctor will tell you about them, and not everyone is a good candidate. I just had near sightedness with no astigmatism so I was a perfect candidate.

As far as the procedure goes, it was no more uncomfortable than going to the dentist. My eyes hurt a little after the procedure, kind of like having something in your eyes, they stung a little, but after 6 or 8 hours, it was completely gone.

So, have you actually had it done or not?

Jemcam, how long ago did you have the surgery? (That price is lower than dtyn's...I'm wondering if it is a difference in doctor price, or if your's is more recent)

I am nearsighted with astigmatism. I'm not sure what the my exact vision is, but to give you a rough estimation, I am about 2.5 ft from my monitor and w/o my glasses I have no chance of distinguishing what each avatar in this thread is.

I talked to my eye doctor a while back and he said that I would be a good candidate for having it.

My GF had LASIK 4 yrs ago and it cost $1200 all in, both eyes. She was minus 10 an now has near 20/20.

She was pretty much over it the next day.

Just do it. You will not regret it.

I had mine done a year and a half ago. The price actually dropped while I was going through the prep. You have to wear glasses only during the time where they measure your eyes once a week or so for about six weeks. This is what makes the difference between a good succesful surgery and one that doesn't have so good results. If you wear contacts, your eye changes shape somehow, so you can't cheat and tell your doctor you haven't been wearing contacts, because if you do, it will be apparent after your surgery. That month or two prior to your surgery is the time to forget about being vain and wear your glasses!

I've never had it done, but I've heard many success stories. The technology has been around for awhile now and has matured. Personally, I would talk with a couple doctors about it and ask about the risks and about new technology that may be coming out. Find out what the success rate is and ask them stuff like, "Would I be better off waiting another year (2 years, 3 years)?" and stuff like that. Also, I would recommend getting it done by a professional. Don't look at the costs. Your eyes are very precious and I would certainly pay an extra $2000 to make sure that I don't go blind in another 10 years. Good luck and share the info you get when you make up your mind!

The price really doesn't bother me. IIRC, I spent $150 on my eyeglasses and about the same for contacts last year. If the surgery costs $2400 or so, it should pay for itself within 10 years.

Well, I'm the one in a million where it went wrong. Massive amounts of astigmatism in my left eye now, not correctable with contacts or glasses. Lots of halos and blurry vision. Check out SurgicalEyes.

i call bs. my brother does this as a private practice and he does not lie to his patients. It is NOT in his best interest to do so. he wouldn't get referrals if he did and that's where the he gets the bulk of his "business".

there are many "corporate" facilities where doctors are encouraged to get their numbers up so your logic doesn't hold.

It should be said and decided on a case by case basis. your logic is BS and has no bearing on reality.

that said, i had my eyes done 3 yrs ago and have not had 1 moments regret.

it has been very very good for me.

also as to pricing, i wouldn't decide which doctor you are going to go to based on price but for a base level comparison, my brother will do both eyes for $2000.00. i know a lot of doctors who haven't had any near as good results as my brothers had charge a lot more.

That's why I asked him if he ever had it done or has any actual experience. I too call bs on his post. This guy is a flake.

1. This is very possible to get done during the afternoon of a Friday and come back on Monday. Most Dr. offices tend to do it around noon, so you have most of the afternoon off.

2. Each eye is around $500-$750. It all depends on where you are and the competition in the area (I did mine in LA and there are lots of places to get it done).

3. Sorry, can't help.

Basically, I came in around noon, had surgery by 1pm, was home by around 2:30 and slept most of the rest of the day (as recommended). After that, I wore the necessary goggles and on Saturday, I was out and about, wearing sunglasses. Just follow the Dr's orders about the drops, be very vigilant about the drops and medicine.

After half of my life being dependant on lenses to help me see, this was a life changing experience, no doubt.

now that's the stuff I don't want to hear. Seriously though, that sucks. How long ago did you get it done? And what type of vision were you trying to correct (near, far, astig, or combination?) At first I thought I was being anal (and I probably still am) about wanting to get one eye done at a time. But it's stories like this that make you think twice.

I'm 90% sure I'll do it anyways. I'm moving into a new apartment (more expensive) so I'll have to wait a month or so for my expenses to stabilize before I look into it.

That is exactly what I am anticipating. Not worrying about contacts while playing sports. Riding roller coasters w/o worrying about glasses or my contacts drying out. Swimming, rafting, showering, <insert any water related activity>, were always inconvenienced by having to wear glasses/contacts. I look forward to the day when all of these worries go away.

Three years ago, mostly nearsightedness with very little astigmatism, the doc used the LadarVision system. Initially, I had both eyes done at the same time. When they didn't turn out the same, the doctor did an 'enhancement' on my left eye only, and it went bad. The fact is some people heal differently than others, and there's no way of knowing until afterward. I'm not alone, go check out surgicaleyes.org for horror stories from hundreds of people. I have an appointment next week to find out what my latest options are to fix this nightmare.

I just had mine done on New Year's Eve, 2002. I went with LASIK from TLC, www.tlcvision.com

I paid about 1800 per eye, but that comes with free lifetime checkups and corrections if needed... the extra money is well worth it! My eyes went from 20/400 (right eye with astigmatism) and 20/600 to about 20/20 now. My right eye has healed perfectly (probably 20/15), but my left is a little weaker (20/25). My doc says not to worry about it, it's only been 6 months and if there's a big problem for the yearly checkup then they could do a touch up in my one eye.

Basically, you have the surgery done and wear eye shields for 3-4 days. You are given antibiotic and anti inflammatory drops which u will use for a month if I recall. After that, you just have to be sure to use rewetting drops (they say for 3 months, but I still use them b/c my eyes get dry). All in all, it was a great experience!

EDIT: My night vision has been pretty good, but in general I can see better in the daytime. I'm 25 if that helps. I've heard that if you're too young they might not do it because you're still growing. Also heard that if you're a -8 (800) or worse then you can't have it done...
