I remember reading about some anandtechers posting about some anti-anxiety info. Well, I've been dealing with an anxiety problem for a while now and never really wanted to go to meds, but I'm starting to look into them. I just want to stay the same person, so I won't be different towards my friends and family. As well as trying not being dependent on any drugs cause i hear they can be addictive. i'm not much a fan of the meds. Anyone have any insight on the side effects or better yet got any "natural remedies"?

thanks.

You might think about giving them a shot. I was on Paxil for a while, and though I didn't stay on it, it helped me to get out of a rut I was in. Now I neff more or less happily. My life is no more or less better than it was (except for not having the anxiety). I have learned to deal with it better, though. That learning couldn't have taken place had I not taken the drugs for awhile.

Good luck with whatever you do, though.

Paxil has worked for me. It does have side effects, but I didn't become some different person.

Bring up these concerns with your doctor. He/she (don't we have a better pronoun yet?) will go over the different options. I have some friends that went on some antianxiety meds and all of them said that it made them feel "more like themselves." Whatever the case I don't know of any side effect that isn't reversible from these meds so you can always just stop (be sure to let you doctor know). That is except the propensity for these meds to cause a decreased amount of saliva in the mouth leading to quite a bit of tooth decay.

Have you thought about seeking a psychiatrist for cognitive or behavioral therapy, instead of reaching for some pills?

What triggers the anxiety?

I've heard of some psychopathetic side effects (seriously) where people lose their minds and go nuts. Also heard the same thing about anti-depressant drugs. My thought is that mind altering drugs like those, which try to change you, are bad. Then again they may be good who knows.

natural remedies:
get some good korean red (ginseng)
exercise
hot tub/spa
play some computer games and get it out (Call of Duty multiplayer or Counter-Strike...cheaters may make you more anxious...scrap that one if you find games hurt more then help)
lots of sex
masturbate furiously like a banshee

Epiphany,

It might take a number of things to work through this:

1) CBT therapy (as indicated above)
2) Meds (e.g. Paxil, Lexapro, etc.)
3) Finding time to relax and practice relaxation, etc.

I've been through this. Actually, compared to where I was two-three years ago, I'm nearly functioning at 100% once again. The biggist thing to understand is that there is no "quick fix." Meds will add calmness, but when the calmness is added, you have to work on some skills for dealing with the anxiety. However, I would suggest that you talk with your doctor and work on getting some referrals. Anxiety can be rough to deal with and given your circumstance (starting school soon & the rest of your life to live) you want to make sure this crap isn't haunting you.

Best of luck to you. :)

Xanax sucks. I lady I worked with a few years ago gave me a handful of those things to try. They might as well have been skittles.

Just go get yourself an 1/8th of northern lights and be done with it. Man I miss that stuff sometimes :(

Just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean that it isn't a good med. Xanax is actually one of the quickest-acting meds for calming anxiety. Name another med that you can place under your tongue and get the effects of it in less than 5 minutes?

Theres various sizes. The biggest *I've* ever seen prescribed to a person was 1 mg, and that person was all fvsked in the head. The normal size is .25 or .5, which is actually pretty small. Find youself the 1'2 or 2's and take a few of those. Dear God, someone could steal your car, rape your dog and beat you up and you wouldnt care one bit.

Actually, the FDA has approved *up to 10mg* of Xanax per day for anxiety and panic disorders. Granted, this is at the highest end of what would typically be allowed. Taking 10mg in one day means that you'd probably sleep for a good amount of time once the Xanax got into your system.

I've taken 3mg within 5 hours before. I didn't sleep, get tired or pass out. Now, if I was to take a .5 mg tablet, I'd have a good nap. :)

I can't say enough about CBT therapy. It's really essential in allowing you to see what is causing some of the issues within yourself. Plus, what you learn from CBT therapy will stick with you -- in the event the med you're taking decides to top working one day.

Yeah, the 1 mg prescript was for like 2 or 3 times a day plus to be used in the event of massive anxiety attack. I cant remember right off, it wasnt for me anyways. Most I've taken at a time was 4 mg, of course I dont use it for its prescribed reasons... ;)
And trust me, pop about 2 mg and drink a few whisky sours..... :Q

"Like a banshee?" WTF.
How warped is your mind that when you come up with a simile involving masturbation, you immediately think of an Irish wailing ghost? That's messed up.

I finished with 7 months of CBT in December, and I'm still on Prozac with an as-needed prescription for Klonopin. The Klonopin works great for me; I haven't had severe rushes of anxiety since I started taking it.

I had 2mg Xanax 5 times a day. I've taken 200mgs of it before. I wouldn't recommend the 200mg. Not for everyone.

benzodiazepenes (ativan, xanax, etc.) can be addicting but kick in pretty fast. drowziness/sleepiness is a big side-effect.

SSRIs (paxil, prozac, zoloft) are relatively safe, not addictive. talk to your doc about these.

also behavioral therapy will help.

Doc gave me Xanax to help me deal with the acute anxiety of my wife leaving me. Stuff works great, though I never tried putting it under my tounge ... tastes terrible, very bitter. For awhile, I needed it to get any sleep. The doc told me it isn't addictive, but I'm careful with it anyway.

my greatest fear is that i will become dependent on it. I talked to a couple of friends who have taken medication and they say it is hard to come off of. I don't know, the drug is just not a natural thing. Anyone recommend some relaxation tips to use possibly to help calm down my anxieties.

But at this point i am seriously considering taking medication =(
