Anyone have info about the "re-released" NES, SNES & Genesis?

Hey Everyone, this may seem like a weird request, but here goes...

I assume lots of people here remember the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, and Sega Genesis Video Game Systems?

Well, I'm trying to find some info about these systems when they were "re-released" as smaller more compact consoles toward the ends of their
respective life spans. Specifically, I know that the original NES was re-released as a top-loading unit just before the Super NES debuted, the Super NES had a second version that was slightly more compact than the original, and the Sega Genesis actually had 3 iterations, the original, a popular second version, and a more rare third version that seemed to be about the size of a portable cd player.

Does anyone out there have any info about these systems? Are there webpages that talk about the differences and is there any place where people can still buy them?

Thanks in advance,
obispo21

I only know that the Dreamcast is offering 'Smash' pack disk for the dreamcast that have 12 genesis games (ie. golden axe, space harrier, phantasy star 2. etc). But I don't know of anything for the nes or snes.

Cheers,
Aquaman

dude i work at a funcoland pm for any info cause there is to much to get into but the main reason they are revised is to fix overheating and various bug fixes and the fact that they shrink the chips and produce them cheaper , the psx has been through 4 versions cause its a pos and the ps2 is already on its second cause its another pos

I don't know if they still sell them, but I remember seeing the 3rd version of the Sega Genesis for sale at Toys R US last year. I still have the 2nd version of the system in my closet, next to my original SNES and original NES.

This has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but I read in the recent GamePro that a company bought all manufacutering rights to the Sega Game Gear, and are re-releasing it at Toys-R-Us for like $30, plus releasing some of the old games for it. Just thought I would throw that in for the hint of gaming nostalga going on 🙂

the sega sytem that looked like a portable cd player was the cdx. it was the genesis and sega cd in a portable setup. cdx pic

you can see a lot of these old systems on e-bay. the nes top-loader is nice, they should've made more of those.

i heard there is 1 company that is buying up the rights to these old systems and reselling them. if you're going to get a Gensis, get the Nomad instead 😀 (handheld genesis)

Geeze Stonerdave, did you have to post about the NES top-loader??? I'm browsing egay now for one! NES will always rule!

if im not mistaken, the second version of the snes was actually the japanese version, i had a friend that brought one back , but this was a while back, i maybe be forgetful

Hey Everyone Thanks for the Replys,

I'll be sure to check out all of the info. I have seen a few of these on auction sites before, but it's always kind of tough to know what to type into the search function and browsing is a bit tedious.

stonerdave : hey I totally forgot about the CDX, your right that one does look like a portable cd player. I wasn't thinking of that originally though, I was just thinking about a lone genesis, I believe it was indeed called the Genesis 3 like SMBU says, and it was very very small, looked like it could fit in your palm.

Colt45: I'm not sure how the 2nd Super NES related to the Japanese version, now that you brought it up they do seem to look similar if memory serves me. I'm quite certain that the 2nd SuperNES was a US release though not an import. I remember seeing it at Toys R Us a year back or so, but I never bought it - DOH!

Whatever happened to the Power Glove?

Man, this brings back a lot of memories....16-bit was a breakthrough at one time...*sniff*

According to one my my friends, NES games work nearly perfect with the newer toploading one.

Anyone remember that little robot thing that came with the original NES power system? What was that thing called? My friend had one, but I just had the plain system.

Yeah, it's a pirate system. there are tons of them out there. Famous ones are from china, russia and a lot in the middle east. Unauthorized hardware. they are still making them. It's not worth 120 bucks though. sub quality parts and labor. you can probably get it for less than 50 USD in Hong Kong perhaps.

Check out gamespot, I think they've done a history of consoles or something, I remember reading it about a year ago.

Between two of the guys here on my floor, they probably have close to 150 NES games, one of them has the newer NES system, and the other one has the front loader

I've got an original and a top-loader NES. The top-loader was actually released slightly after the SNES. It is NOT the Famicom.
