Anyone have Hard Drive access glitches during gameplay?

I was wondering if anyone has noticed if there system seems to lock for a split second then resume while in a FPS game. For instance when I run the Quake3 timedemo 1, it plays really fast then for prob 1/10th of a second it stops then it continues on fast again. I have noticed that the hard drive is being accessed as this glitch happens. My read ahead for the drive is set to max, DMA is on. This never happened on my Intel, or at least very rarely. I have owned 2 AMD athlons based systems and both seem to do the same thing. Could there be a problem with there Controller cards? All i know is that my drive should not be to blame since my p3 800mhz worked just fine with it. All drivers are updated, and have tried everything but kick my machine. Any ideas would be really great.

Have you tried DLing the diagnostic utilities from WD's website to check your drive with? Not sure it's a controller problem, could be HD based.....
