I've bought a bunch of MAxtor drives for various machines. Currently I'm running a 13 and a 20 GB Maxtor Diamond MAx Plus right now and both fly. I haven't had a faster drive, except for some scsi ones I was running, and the price can't be beat

I have a new 15gig 7200rpm maxtor, its the diamond max plus, its silent. when I had my case open I had to struggle to hear if the drive was reading, kills me when I actually have to listen to a hd now, sounds like they are dieing ;)

I've also got a 9gig wd expert and I think I'm a maxtor fan now, the wd is a good drive, but the maxtor is better imo.

I have a new 40 Gb and an old 10Gb, the older on is slightly on the noisy side, but the new Diamond Max 40 runs very well

Here's from AT's most recent High End Buyer's Guide @ High End Gaming System:

"We still maintain that hard drive speed is one of the biggest bottlenecks in a system, so we won?t skimp in this category, but we did decide that RAID was overkill for a gaming system. The overall fastest drive we've tested to date is still the Diamond Max 40 Plus from Maxtor. We chose the 40GB model because we know how much space all those games can eat up.

IBM's Deskstar 75GXP should be out soon, as well as a number of other ATA 100 models, that promise to take the crown away from Maxtor. We'll have to wait and see if that actually happens. For now the 40 Plus is king. Further information is available in our Maxtor DiamondMax 40 Plus Review."

The ibm 75gxps have been out for a month. The new ibms and the new quantum lm take the crown from the maxtor diamondmax plus series. I have a 30 gb 75gxp and love it! But any of these drives will do ya well.

I just got a Maxtor 30.7 7200RPM DMAX 40+ and it runs great. It's the quietest hard drive I've ever owned. Performance seems to be great but yet I have no comparison to any other 7200 hard drives.

I have a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 6800 27.3 GB HDD on the way. My question is how are you fellas planning to partition your huge HDDs???

i might consider doing a swap partition for MS to keep stuff organized. then maybe a 1.5 gig windows partitoion for the windows OS and then the rest storage...

I like the deskstar alot but it is $30 more for that 30gig on buy.com.

oh and I will NEVER own another quantum. I have a Quantum Bigfoot 8gig. Its Slow, Load, and VERY hot. but it was cheap I guess.

ravedave..

Quantum Bigfoot is the value range of hard drive. the Fireball series has always been very fast and comparable to other manufactures.. :)

i brought a retail maxtor 30.7 7200rpm 2months back & i've formatted this driver 10+ times already & it's still quite & the scores i get from sandra2000 pro are always different the 1st score was in the 13000+ second time i ran the test in win me & got 19000+ using the standard ver of sandra 2000.7.6.49 & went back to win98SE & now i get 20400, crazy eh. if you want to find out your hdd performance use the standard sandra2000.7.6.49 instead of the pro ver.

These Diamond Max plus 7200rpm Maxtors are super quiet and fast. I am very impressed with the 15g I installed recently. Benchmarks are great, and alot quieter as compared with the WD Expert series HD I have in the same PC.

Interesting.. I am using a DiamondMax 40, 40GB 7200rpm and the thing is louder than stink! I think something maybe wrong with the drive even.. I can't really hear it chug along as it looks for files but just spinning it is loud.
