I was driving in Chicago the other day and saw a car that said "zipcar.com" on the back of it. Me being curious, I looked at the site (http://www.zipcar.com) and it looks to be a car sharing service. You pay an annual fee, and they provide you cars within walking distance whenever you need them. You can pay for a whole day of use (max 125 miles), or per hour. They cover gas, insurance, etc.

You get this card when you sign up, and you make your reservations online, up to hours before you need the car even. You then go to the car and hold your card to the window, and it unlocks, as easy as that.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with something like this before. I'm going to be living in the city for awhile, and while I don't see myself needing a car everyday, it would certainly be nice to have access to one.

Cool idea. Kinda like those umbrella cans in places. Pick up an umbrella and take it to some other place and leave it, then someone else can use it.

They were talking to a rep from zipcar on a Chicago AM radio station yesterday afternoon. It sounded like it was a great program. You don't even have to pay for the gas. And you can also reserve a car in any of the cities that the program is active. So if you lived in Chicago and had to travel to Denver for business, you could easily reserve a car there and have it at your disposal during your stay.

It's a really interesting concept that is very different from car-pooling or car-renting.
