I don't want to add another Ethernet card (already have 3Com Etherlink XL) to my already crowded system. But I want to be able to file and Internet share with a second computer. Has anyone used a USB Ethernet adapter?
I hate them, I do tech support for cable modems with AT&T RoadRunner, those NIC's Suck, yeah they are easy to install but people always accidently unplug them, they think they are still plugged in but they really arn't!
I used a Linksys one for awhile with no problems and it did not slow down my system using it. I had to go back to a standard 10/100 nic to be able to run Linux.
Keep in mind that you'll be limited by the available bandwidth on the USB bus, so if you purchase a USB scanner and scan an image while at the same time surfing the net or file sharing using the USB Ethernet adapter, you won't get the full bandwidth since USB itself has a bandwidth of only 12Mbps. I've used a direct USB-USB ethernet connection from Belkin and I got about 3Mbps of bandwidth. It's alright, but I still prefer NICs.
