anyone have experience with this MP3 player? (RCA Lyra RD1021)

my main qualifications are that i need something flashbased, relatively small, has an armband, and cheap.

this rca is expandable with sd/mmc cards (i have a 256mb mmc card), so the 64mb is a non-issue.

anyone have experience with this?

I have a similar one, not sure if it's exactly the same. Same basic feature set w/ more internal memory. I'm running it with a 256MB SD card for a total of 384 and it works well. Distorts with larger headphones at max volume, but is okay at one step down.

Man, that's cheap. When I was looking at this model it was $100 and up.
I have another Lyra, the RD1080, and it's fine.
I would definitely purchase that for $49.

this player has a shuffle/random mode right?

my current player doesn't have that, and it's kind of annoying.

edit: nevermind, looks like it does 🙂

Random, repeat and programmable playback modes.

sweet, looks like i might stop by Walmart today and pick it up 🙂

i wish there was a Fry's nearby....i read a review somewhere that said they got it for $30 there :Q

I"ve got the 128mb model. Had for about a year now and I really like it. Of course the headphones that come with it are crap, but that's usually a given...The player itself is nice. Despite what the instructions say, you don't need musicmatch to transfer music to it, just hook it up and let windows (xp or 2k) recognize it as a removable drive (2 drives if you have a mem card in) and drag and drop.

awesome. i especially like that windows recognizes it as a drive 🙂

I got one a week ago. It's nice and cheap, but when you turn it up too loud, it skips for some reason (might be the headphones).
The armband is useless unless you only listen to your songs in a certain order. When I exercise, I like to skip around and play certain songs, but to do that you must take it out of the armband, find the song you want, then fumble with putting it back in the armband. But that's a personal preference. Not a failing of the player.
I like how it's easy to drag and drop songs, but you might have to upgrade the firmware, because it was having some issues with my sd card and windows xp sp2.
The headphone work nicely.
It has a few different setting for bass, rock, pop, etc..etc...
Any other questions?

normally, i load up a bunch of songs and just listen to them while i work out. i wanted a shuffle/random mode, so i can just set it on shuffle and listen to whatever while it's in the armband. i practice a lot of basketball, so the armband will definitely be useful. right now i clip my mp3 player to my shorts and use the waistband ties to make sure it doesn't fall off 😕

btw, how loud is "too loud"?

also, does the armband keep the player snug while running?

I have an RCA Lyra (can't remember the model #) but I have the version with 3Gb memory. I agree that the armband if frustrating since you can't see the buttons to change the songs. The upside is that you can create playlists for working out. I like it because there are so many categories for playing music. I'd recommend it.

It will work for you then. The shuffle mode is pretty nice.
It's real easy to use. I had a Rio Sport 64mb, but it died. I liked the Rio better because it had better sound, and an FM Tuner. But for the price, it's really nice. Just don't turn it up too loud. The headphone might fall off if you do alot of exercise with them on, but they sound nice.

Yes, the armband does well for running (very hard for it to slip). Now if you're doing jumping jacks.....

cool. i have a set of earbuds that i've been using with my current player and they serve me well. i'll most likely ditch the rca's headphones and use mine.

thanks for the input!

I don't think you can make playlist with the rd1021, It's a pretty simple player. You just drag and drop the music, and it will play in the order you see it on your PC. But other than that, it doesn't have the settings of the more expensive players.

well, i usually jump when i play basketball....is it likely to fall out? how is it contained within the armband?

It's like a pouch that seals with velcro. It will hold it. I have mine with me right now. but you can't see any of the buttons other than the volume.

my wife has the 128 MB version for more than a year now. she seems to like it a lot. she uses it for 3-4 times a week working out regularly. no problem so far.
