I'm planning on buying a DFI NS35SL as it has integrated audio/video/LAN for a college student. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the SiS650 chipest.....and how is the video performance?? I guess the number 1 thing is stability......if anyone has any info to share I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I've got the ASUS P4S333-VM based on the SiS650.

It's in a machine that I've got for my dad, so I haven't really checked out the video speed for gaming purposes. The onboard video is an SiS315 without the T&L. Make sure that you put the FSB:RAM ratio to 3:5 or 4:5 if you want decent performance.

I am disappointed with the onboard LAN on my board though....it is horrendously slow sometimes, and I can't figure out why.

In terms of overall stability, I haven't had any problems.

Specs of that system here.

If chatting, browsing and MP3s are all you are going to be using the system for, then the 650 chipset based system is perfectly capable.

$600! Hah! That's a fortune! For that much you shouldn't have any problem finding a good motherboard with LAN, audio and video integrated. Then all you need is a processor, RAM, Hard drive, CD-drive, and case. If you are building this computer for college starting in the fall or some later deadline like that, you might consider waiting for the nforce2 boards... i hear tell that they are going to be extremely affordable, especially for allt hey bring a system (I've heard ~100... that leaves plenty for the other extras I mentioned...
email me pug@ucsd.edu if you want any advice on budgeting... I'm a college student and make pc's for my friends on those kinds of budgets...
peace,
