I've been extended a good job offer in Orlando, FL. For my relocation, I am considering buying a travel trailer for about $15,000 (monthly payment: $175) and staying in a KOA RV park for about 6-8 months while I save up for a down payment on a house. At that point I will sell the trailer.

I'm looking at purchasing a 2006 Gulf Stream Conquest 26' travel trailer... one queen bed, dinette, microwave, fridge + freezer, stove, oven, etc. My payment will be $175/month and it will be about $300/month to stay on the campground will full hookup (cable tv, water, sewage, electric, etc).

I'm planning on making the purchase tomorrow. Just trying to do my best to avoid throwing away $800+/month on an apartment.

I hope you're planning on being alone and that the shower works well.

One thing to consider is travel trailers aren't always meant for full time use.

I imagine 6-8 months will be fine, especially since it's a Gulf Stream.

Hey, it works for McDreamy!!

OP, most RV's have EXTREMELY small hot water tanks, (5-8 gallons) so you'll have to learn a whole new way to shower! Hopefully, it comes with a GOOD air conditioner, and your power bill is included at the place where you park...you'll need the A/C in one...they get pretty hot and closed in, even with all windows open...some come with 2 or even 3 A/C units...but those will draw a LOT of electricity. I lived in one for several years when on the road, booming construction jobs...Not the most convenient way to live, but usually cheaper than motelling it. Renting an apt. will probably be as cheap in the long run, and a LOT more comfortable...

Payment of $175 plus $300 campground fee ("kampground" actually, since it's KOA) = $475/month.

Rent = $800/month.

Difference: $325/month for 6-8 months.

Best case, you save $2600 ($325*8 months).

But it'd actually be less savings than that.

After 8 months of using a 2006 trailer, you won't be able to sell it for what you paid for it (or what you paid for it minus whatever small dent your payments have made in the principal), so your savings will be less. Plus, there's the tax you'll pay on buying the trailer that won't be recouped when you sell it.

Doesn't sound to me like it'd be worth it.
