Have ethernet cables strewn all over the house and the wife wants them gone. Wifi is fine for web browsing throughout most of the house but chokes on streaming. Been looking at powerline ethernet and hoping it would work for me.

3 bdrm house was built in 1996. Looking at placing one outlet in each room. I believe upstairs rooms are on their own circuit and base will be downstairs by the wifi router. Only big draw there is the plasma but its only on 5-6 hrs a week.

I suggested it as a bit of a last resort for a friend and his wife. The computer room is an addition on the home being built on a slab tacked onto a quad level home. He had said for years to me that running wires or even a coax cable out there was an impossibility so I finally had no choice but to accept it.

Despite locating the wireless router as close as possible to the short hallway connecting the main house and the addition, signal levels were poor to non-existent at his wife's desk where her desktop resided. We're both pretty sure that when the addition was put on that the brick on the outside of the home was left in place. So, a number of walls including a closet and bath with shower off the hallway plus the brick make the room nearly impenetrable.

So, about a year and a half ago I suggest powerline as something to try. In their case, it worked and I have heard no complaints.

I've never gotten it to work reliably, and will probably try again in another 5-10 years when I live in a different house and am not wanting to run ethernet cables again.

I use it in a bedroom that doesn't have Ethernet. It's been 100%, reliable. I use att dsl. The rest of the house I just use wireless. Good enough for me.
