anyone have experience with movers?

i'm moving this fall and need to take all my crap with me...anyone have any clue how much it would cost to move a small studio's worth of furniture etc. to new york? (~370 miles)

i paid some movers 100 bucks to move my piano. When the truck showed up, a bottle of budweiser/heine/and corona fell out of a brown paper bag and spilled all over the street. He opened his truck door and took a pee, then went to the back to get my piano with his carni friend.

That was the last time I ever hired a mover

You might be better off selling everything that isn't a family heirloom or something completley irreplacable. Yo're going to pay quite a bit of money to move all your stuff. And depending on where you're at in the city, the move-in itself will be a nightmare.

i've been thinking about this. i could replace all my crap ikea furniture for under 500 bucks, and take my essentials in my car.

And stuff like non critical clothes, like your favorite snowpants and auntie quilts can be shipped in boxes so you just mail the day you drive out and can deal with them a day or two after you've already arrived.

Definitely try to avoid hiring a moving company if at all possible. The throw out/replace furniture, and shipping boxes to your new place strategy is much less risky if you have a small apartment.

It's just about impossible to find a ethical mover. They charge by weight but you don't get to find out the ACTUAL weight until the truck is loaded. When they come to give you an estimate, it's going to be low so they get the job. Then when everything you own arrives at the destination, they tell you it's an extra $1,000. Either pay or they keep your stuff, and by the way it's an extra $150 per day "storage fee" until you DO pay.

My guess is it would cost around $1,500 to pay a moving company to pack/drive/unpack. If you get one of those "you-pack" deals (they drop off a container which you pack, they pick it up and drive it, you unload it at the other end) you might get it down to around half of that. At least with a you-pack arrangement there can't be any extra charges.
