My wife and I are hoping to be one of the first to jump on a new subdivision in the North Atlanta area and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with working with the builder to have ethernet wired through the home. I mainly want it in the basement and to any other location in the house that will serve as likely office space for my wife (she works from home).

Just curious as to what kind of deal you had to work with the builder or any problems you experienced.

Thanks.

i havnt done it myself, but both of my uncles have, and had no trouble at all getting their homes prewired. it was almost standard from their home builders. Then my mothers house DOESNT have any ethernet, but she didnt even ask, so im not sure if as option.

its a pretty standard thing now - most builders offer it as an option at the very least
wouldn't you just want to toss in a wireless network though instead?:)

Reason I was asking because the last builder I worked with was a total a$$ about allowing my home security company come into wire my home for security. Hoping this next one doesn't give me any problems with wiring stuff myself. Also want to wire one of the rooms in the basement for a home theater.

if your G.C. is not knowledgeable about it, get M&M Communications (Marietta) to do it as a sub , they should be in the phone book

If I had a laptop, I would buy a wireless router. But, since I don't, I want to hardwire at least the basement for my PCs and Xbox and one other line to go into a room or closet on the main floor to host a wireless router for when I do get a laptop.

I wanted to do this in our new house, but the wife balked at the $50 per drop that the contractor wanted us to pay.

I would have done it myself if they would have let me, but they declined. They said there were too many liabilites (nevermind the fact that I wired 40 offices here at work).

BTW, where in North Atlanta? I just built a house in Duluth.

I'm in Lawrenceville right now...trying to move closer to Alpharetta without moving in Fulton County. The subdivision we are looking at is in Sugar Hill near Lake Lanier. I wouldn't mind moving into Duluth but having a hard time finding something in our price range and in what we are looking for.

Ok, but you aren't allowed to buy a house there before me. ;)

I wired my new house the day after we bought it. It was easy but time consuming.

My recommendation is to have a friend come help you. Someone who knows about wiring as well. We went CAT5e ethernet to every room in the house. The longest part of the project was burrowing into the walls and running the wire. My wife was the most nervous because it was a brand new house and I was burrowing from the upstairs to the downstairs. Having someone help you out is the best way to go. Once you wire the house, life is good. Although I still have wireless for the laptops.

my parents built a new house 2 years ago and i insisted they ask the guy to run cat5 from first to third floor

the builder was CLUELESS as the what the hell we were talking about. he ended up getting the electrician to do it for a small fee....but i was shocked that a home builder wouldn't be familiar with networking

be prepared if you're going to try to get them to do it for you

Ditto that. It is getting to the point where it should be considered standard or at least an option. If a builder gives you grief about it, they obviously don't want you money very badly. Finding another one shouldn't be too difficult.

We have five rooms connected to a hub and server in the basement. My parents are responsible for the house, so I can't give you too many details...

Apparently it's not much of a problem, they just slide in the cables along with the phone lines.

any electrician will do it

run gigabit rated cat5 to each room if you can afford it

run from a central point - like your basement
have your cable, telephone, etc brought to the same point i the house..this will make hook ups easier later

just to be sure have your builder run a "chase" from the basement to the attic (basically a plastic tube) this way you can pull other wires/cables up the the attic and drop them down to rooms in the future if your wiring needs change..makes pulling wires easier.

i had my house wired..do it all at once while your building..the cost to pull wires and install outlets later will be staggaring compared to doing it up front before the drywall is in.
