Every woman of child bearing age should take a multivitamin with iron because of the blood lost during their period...

there's different types of anemias...hemolytic anemia, pernicious anemia, iron deficiency anemia...etc...
which one has she been diagnosed with???
if it's iron defiency anemia, if she takes the supplements plus altering the diet, results are normally seen within 6 weeks to 6 months...
also, gotta keep in mind that iron is best absorbed when accompanied with foods high in vitamin c!!!!

You gotta ask your doctor what KIND of anemia your wife has, and your doctor should be answering these questions for you. If you're not getting answers, get a new doctor.

As laFiera said, there are many kinds of anemia, the end result of all of them is that the body has decreased hemoglobin, thus decreased oxygen carrying capacity to the body's tissues.

Some causes of anemia are rather simple to correct, such as with the iron pills. If the cause of the anemia is genetic, though, no amount of nutrition will cure the problem.

Sounds to me like your doctor did a lousy job of informing you. NEVER leave the doctor's office until ALL of your questions are answered.

I'm borderline anemic, or so they tell me every time they take blood from me. I normally don't notice it, but the times when I lived in the dorms, I'd notice it a lot. I'd be very tired all the time, getting 10-12 hours of sleep plus a nap in the afternoon just to keep going. I started taking multivitimens, which helped a ton. I didn't eat much red meat either(unless you count fast food, but that's not good enough apparently) when I was on a meal plan, so that didn't help matters. I moved out on my own and have beef at least 3 nights a week, and I have noticed a big difference. I don't take multivitimans (mostly because I forget them) and I'm nowhere near as tired.

Spinich is high in iron if your wife's a vegetarian.

I recently just went through a temporary anemia. Mine came about when some Gallstones blocked my Bile tract causing me to become Jaundiced. As the Bile accumulated in my blood, anemia began to set in. I too was tired and didn't have much energy for anything.

My wife had iron deficient anemia caused by an operation that left her with little ability to absorb iron. Her blood count got down 7. At that time she could barely get off the couch. A six month regimen of twice a week iron shots has her fit as a fiddle.

Thanks everyone. she does have iron deficiency anemia, I didnn't get to go with her to the doctors, but I did find out her blood count was 10 and 12-14 is normal for women, 8 is severe.

she is taking her iron vitamens, and I'm trying to get her to take a multivitaman also.
